Lightbulb Did Taylor Get a Raw Deal?

I for one cannot understand how Sean Taylor could possibly be upset with his rookie contract. Taylor's deal is for 6 years, has a total value of up to $40 million, gives him $13 million in bonuses, and in any year in which he reaches the Pro Bowl, he can get $9 million.

To give you a frame of reference:

-last year, a franchise tag for a safety was $4.1 million

-Taylor's bonuses are roughly equal to the bonus we gave Coles
on a seven year deal for a position (WR) that is among the
highest paid.

-the total value of Taylor's bonuses is larger than what Terrance
Newman got last year (he was also drafted 5th overall as well) and
cornerbacks are MUCH better compensated than safeties.

-the deal for this rookie safety will make him the highest paid safety
in the league (that's right, more than Roy Williams, Brian Dawkins,
Ed Reed, et al get paid)

-Lawyer Milloy signed a 4 year deal last year worth $15 million with
a $5 million signing bonus.

I don't know, but I can't see how Taylor could complain about his deal. He isn't a quarterback (Brees or Manning), a reciever (Fitzgerald), or a offensive lineman (Gallery). So I don't think he can compare his deal to theirs; he has to know that safeties make less than everyone on the field except punters and kickers.

The deal is definetly fair. The only problem is that other players have been getting overpayed. Examples are Larry Fitgerald Ben Rothlisburger. Manning also got a huge deal. I can understand why Tayler is pissed with all these people getting overpayed around him though.
Hey I guess the happiet guy right now is Eugen Mato, because he's getting the 3 percent adn not longer has to do any work. Haha. Thats like you coming into work on the first day, you get your pay check for the year. And then are told that you are no longer needed.

If there is one thing I've learned, it's that Taylor is wish-washy and mentally a weak fellow. He is starting to get on my nerves. Make a decision and live with it god damn it! He seems easily influenced and when you throw money into a fragile person like that you'll have fire. I see some night club incidents and couple of DUIs in Taylor future.

Manning and Fitzgerald were drafted above him so naturally they'd get more money. The one I'm a bit more confused about is Rothlisberger. I understand that draft picks get slotted salary wise but wouldn't it stand to reason that since he's a QB he'd get more money?

I'm really not all that worried about Taylor. His concerns off the field don't bother me, he wasn't brought in for his legal or financial skills, and I think he'll improve on the field. Just give him time

Perhaps he thought that Drew wouldn't be able to get him into camp.

As far as the deal goes, as the Winslow camp said he got a bad deal, because he didnt get overpaid, which is obviously what the Potsons look for in every contract. Through all of this one can only think that Taylor is flaky, but none of that will matter when he lines up. Im worried about Rosenhaus renegotiating his contract next year...

I wouldn't say Taylor got a "raw deal" per say, but did he get all that he could have? Quite simply, no.

Uh oh. We may have a freak show on our hands. And I love how ESPN puts it saying that he can't even dislodge Lott from the starting spot. Sounds like someone needs to stop reading the sports page coverage of other contracts and concentrate on football. In addition, if he thinks he's going to renegotiate in a year, unless he's in the Pro-Bowl, he's got another thing coming. Hopefully, the Redskins have the fortitude to stand up to this guy like the did to one of my all time favorites, Riggo.

ST looks like a bigger idiot with every passing day. First the super baggy shorts now the moaning about his contract, I cant wait to see whats next. This guy is an all-pro head case in the making so sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

Uh oh Curmudgeon, looks like you might have some competition in the glass half-empy battle....So now apparently how a man dresses is a sign of his abilities on the football field

He's signed, so he could fire an agent a week for the next year and I don't care. He's in camp, and the fact that he's 2nd team is only temporary. I like that Williams is making the kid learn, and yes Ohalete is 3rd team for now. It's not like Ohalete can pull out a highlight reel from last season, but I do think he'll be a good backup to Taylor.

I don't view myself as a "glass half empty guy". I prefer to have folks consider a comment made by Mark Twain:

"The only difference between a cynic and a realist is whether or not you agree with him."

I am still prepared to assume that Sean Taylor will be able to keep his "turmoil" off the field once a game starts. If he does that, he'll be fine. If he sulks on the field or if he becomes disenchanted with coaches or if he starts worrying baout his stats instead of his assignments, THEN there is a huge problem.

If - and it could happen - Kellen Winslow actually gets a bigger contract than Taylor even after being drafted behind Taylor, you can bet that Rosenhaus or whomever Taylor hires to be his agent will make contract noise in the off-season. It is really in the Skins' best interest if the Browns play hardball with KW Jr.
