I think we need perspective on this. Fans can get angry at a guy like Petrino just walking away adn quitting for greed or selfish reasons. hell we can get mad at Spurrier for tanking the team into the ground and then bolting. But Joe brought this team back to respectability through some trying times and he isn't leaving the cupboard bare. He has honest to goodness struggles in his personal life to deal with. I have no ill will about this. Just disappointment.

Yes you do.

If anything, you should respect Gibbs more after this season, from the way he held the team together and led them, to his love for his family over his career and personal success.

He fully intended to fulfill his contract coming in, but...life happens.

I realize I sound really selfish right now. Like I said, I just want to hear it from him. However, right now, I'm upset.

I'm worried about the impact on this team. Frankly, I thought we were on the brink of something great and I wanted him to share in that when we finally did it. So much for my foolish, childlike dreams I guess. I need to come back to reality.

I'm looking forward to his presser today. I'm sure he'll explain everything.

My guess is he wouldn't be doing this if he wasn't absolutely sure that the team would be in good hands. Meaning I think he's going to hand things off to Gregg Williams, and keep as much of the current staff intact as possible.

G. Will could be alright as long as Saunders stays for the O-fense. Guess we'll all wait and see what drastic changes our team will endure this offseason. Damn, I was just starting to feel our continuity too. Oh well here's another few years off my life thanks to the skins. But thanks for everything Joe and good luck in all of your endeavours. Enjoy your time on this earth brother

Don't you think that past success is indicative of future success? I'd say you'd have to have more faith in them than in someone who has NOT gotten it done at the highest level. We're not talking about guys who had a good year or two. They've demonstrated consistent skill at managing a NFL team.

For the first time in 4 years I may join the "We need a GM" bandwagon, pending notice of who is going to be our next HC.

You want him to announce his plans at the beginning of the season or during the stretch run? No one wants to be lame duck coach...Plus he has always maintained that he'll reevaluate his role at the end of the season. There is no valid reason to be angry with his decision.

Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President

Ok, from my perspective I wanted Gibbs back. I think we were very close to being an elite team this year (how many games did we have the lead in the 4th quarter and lose?), next year i think could have been great. now, if we don't keep Williams, we will risk having to start all over. I'm sick of that. Lets see what Williams and Co can do...

In terms of Gibbs 2.0: from an objective perspective (for the most part i think), it wasn't that impressive...we had two "good" (playoff years) where it took miracle runs (5 wins and 4 wins in a row to close the season) to make the playoffs. Under Gibbs 2.0, we'll have a losing record, 1 playoff win, and are currently 20 mill over next year's salary cap. his 4 years were plagued with poor clock management, conservatism, and frustration.

From a personal point, I think he did some very good things in terms of building player and fan morale, team chemistry, and expectations of winning. Are we better off now than before? I'll leave that for the other thread.

Overall, I'm sad to see Gibbs go (however frustrating I found these past seasons)...I just hope the team he build, doesn't' disintegrate with his removal.

Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President

I'm a bit shocked, I thought Joe would stick it out the full 5 years. That being said, I am not at all unhappy with the situation. I have been a critic of Gibbs II and it will be interesting and exciting, for me at least, to see where the team goes from this point. I expect Williams to be named head coach. I have always been under the impression that he was snatched up and retained as he has been so that he could be the next head coach. I would be surprised if Saunders did not stay in his current position. His window of opportunity to be a head coach is closed now, he is a damn good coordinator and is compensated extremely well for what he does. What I see is a more wide open offense in the coming years with Gibbs no longer Saunders back.
As for the speculation of outside coaches, anything is possible, but Cowher, Grimm, are not realistic prospects for the job at this time.

Just a not about Cam Cameron - lets not forget that he was a Redskins assistant for three years under Norv, and former OC in San Diego. His record as a head coach at Indiana and Miami is atrocious, he seems like a guy who should soend his entire career as a coordinator.

Laugh all you want about Cameron but that guy will be a winner. On another subject I wouldn't be surprised if Bugel also steps down. How do Gregg Williams and Al Saunders get along? Wasn't there some kind of distance between the O and D? How about ego's, if Williams gets the job who's to say Saunders won't step down cause he didn't get it?

Not always, especially in the field of sports where you are but one component of a very large puzzle. I just think you guys give GMs way too much credit.

Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President

Gibbs leaving brings up a bigger issue, our three headed personnel chief is down one head. Who is going to interview the new coach? Cerrato and Snyder? Do they replace Joe with a team president?

John Riggins called this way early on his radio show, can't wait to hear his thoughts on this.

Lady, we usually have the same take on events at Redskins Park. We differ on this one. Perhaps I am wrong, but I really believe that Gibbs wanted to finish out his contract. But, he has always said that family comes first and perhaps his family told him, "No more, coaching is affecting your health and our grandson is extremely sick....it's time to spend time with your family." Obviously I am just speculating, but Gibbs made this decision after conferring with his family and I can't come up with any other explanation for it all.
