WashingtonPost.com: Gibbs Hired as Redskins Coach After Meeting With Cooke

Really interesting article from when Gibbs was first hired.

Notice the comments about owner influence, and a balanced attack.

"Cooke wants to make the Redskin games "fun for the fans" and he wants to see more passing and more progressive thinking on offense. Cooke was very impressed with the Chargers this season, especially because they were entertaining even when they lost."

"Under Pardee, the Redskins attempted to develop a balanced attack, with emphasis on establishing a running game. The Chargers passed first and ran as an after thought. Gibbs said he anticipated using this offensive approach here next year."

Those two paragrapsh are really interesting because a.) people think that Snyder is meddlesome but I guess they forget/never knew about Cooke. and b.) Gibbs stressed balance so much the past few years.

Re: In the Beginning

Not to get side tracked but I was watching NFLN yesterday and all day they had on America's Game the 1982, 1987, 1991 Redskins superbowls. It was really great and brought tears to my eyes. And Gibbs even said about how Cooke came down on him in 1991, and said that Gibbs kept too many old players and the Jimmy Johnson in Dallas is doing it the "right" way.

Anyhow, I want to know ,or know where I can find it, the roster of the 1987 replacement players for the Redskins.

100k a year? What a bargain!! We should bring back Beathard by his obvious perception of human quality, he was right on the money.
Joe Gibbs- The best coach of all time, Lombardi trophy should be renamed Gibbs.

Art Monk- Art was like an OL playing WR, doing the dirty work and not getting the glory.

Darrell Green- Best DB ever.

Wow, thanks for posting that Smoot. It's funny, a lot of what was said in that article are the same things that are being said today in regards to what teams are wanting (pass first offense, younger players..etc.)
