Anyone been reading his blog on the Wash Post?

He has an interesting take on the HC hunt:

I've enjoyed watching them pull together their new coaching staff. It reminds me of how Lee Marvin picked his team in the 1967 movie, The Dirty Dozen. In the movie, each man was picked individually and with a specific skill for a specific task to meet the team's goal. Now, if I am right and this is what they are doing, then I applaud it because this way there is no place to hide for anyone. Every coach, just like every player, is in an independent contractor with full accountability to the owner and the owner alone. I think this is a great formula for success as it makes everyone pull their own weight with no relational hiding places as when a head coach hires everyone.

What about this talk about them needing to hire a GM to win big? Hogwash! I don't agree. Everybody knows that football is a game of yards and inches. These guys are very close and, trust me, it won't be a GM that puts them over the top. No! It's going to be the play on the field, not a decision in an office that will put them over the top.

"They can win big without a GM!"

Let me hear your thoughts, good or bad. I just want to hear from you.

I went on to say that if I was right and that's what the Redskins were doing, that I applauded their decision because it eliminates anyone's ability to hide. Well, I was right! That's exactly what they're doing! They want the coaching staff to be held accountable for their individual performance. They don't want to hire some superstar head coach with his own supporting cast of coaches who can hide behind their friendship and history with the head coach. It's just what I suspected. It makes sense, and I agree with that decision 100 percent.

Yeah I've been reading his blog the past couple days as well, I think it's a really nice thing to do on his part. I suspect that his theory about the coaching search is true as well.

i really like the accountability thing. last year everyone was wondering what each individuals job responsibility was.

Yeah seems to be a common theme right now.

First with Vinny and now it's trickling down to the staff.

Interesting read. However, I'm not sure how the team's hiring process has affected accountability. Coaches always have been and will be accountable to someone. The only difference between our hiring process and other teams' hiring processes is that Snyder and Vinny will be more accountable for the team since they have handpicked the staff.

If the coordinators are responsible for Offense and Defense, what exactly is the HC responsible for?

DS: "Our offense sucks!"

HC: "I didn't hire this staff! Go see Zorn it's his fault."

DS: "Our defense is horrible"

HC: "Our defensive staff was here before i got here. Go see Blatche."

Hey, I'm all for accountability for one's job. Everyone is accountable in the NFL. If you don't do your job you get fired.

I agree. Plus, bottom-up staff hiring is rarely effective. The head coach has to be comfortable with his staff, but, more importantly, the head coach needs a strategic vision for the team. Usually, that means the assistant coaches need to fill particular roles, as opposed to assembling an "all star" lineup. Time will tell if this will work, but there is no question it is against the grain.

It's interesting becaue is this implying that Snyder felt that was the case in recent years?

Anyhow, it's very similar to a piece I read the other day (I think in the DC Examiner). Trying to find a link

Maybe so.

I don't think it's a stretch of the imagination to say that under Gibbs the other coaches were shielded quite well. Gibbs was always quick to take the blame for everything with the media and I wouldn't be surprised if he took the same approach behind closed doors with Snyder too.

Most people that are potential head coaches would NEVER agree with this type of set-up. Synder is an idiot.

That's not true though. There are only 32 of this job in the world, and despite all the negatives about it, it's still highly coveted.

You DO eliminate the Belichick/Cowher type who have nothing left to prove and have a big ego, but is that really the type of coach we want?

The fact that a highly respected coach like Mariucci is interested in this position really does disprove your point though. If Mooch is OK with the set up, then I have to assume that 95% of coaches who are out of a job would also be.

I'll give you that it's a definite negative if you are competing directly with another franchise for someone's services, but notice how we didn't hire Zorn/Blache until all the other HC openings were filled.
