Patriots Expected to Release LB Colvin

Pats expected to release Colvin - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com

What do you all think? I think this might be someone we should give some serious consideration to signing. VC talked about going after guys that our coaches are familiar with, and Blache is very familiar with Colvin.

He's on the wrong side of 30 but so was Fletch, and Colvin seems like he could be for Blache what Fletcher was last year for Williams; a playmaker who understands and can communicate Blache's message to the rest of the players. Plus his age could mean a reasonable contract.

(I also say we should sign him so we can continue the Zorn pun craze we're on and see an "Every Rose Has a Zorn" headline somewhere)

Colvin is nearly identical to Marcus Washington. Briggs is the better option for what we are looking for.

Re: Patriots Expected to Release LB Colvin

If Briggs didn't come here is Colvin a good alternative or is not making any move the better alternative?

Re: Patriots Expected to Release LB Colvin

i think it depends on the health status of rocky. Also there are a few linebackers in this upcoming draft that look like later picks that could be impact players...

I thought there were only a couple decent LBs in this draft. I'm just going on what the "experts" have stated thus far. Nfl.com's web pg. said today that LBs weren't impressive in the combine as well.

Colvin sounds like a good depth signing a la Godfrey of last year. What about Lemar Marshall? He becomes available in a few days.

If there's any position besides DB I want to see us spent some temporary money on, it's this one. I think he'd come far cheaper than Briggs and provide some insurance if Rocky wasn't quite ready.

Colvin certainly isn't a bad player, but given those three options, I would answer as so.

1) Briggs
1a) No one
2) Colvin

It's not that Colvin would be a bad fit here, it's that forcing Marcus out the door after this year and replacing him with Colvin really doesn't accomplish anything.

And leaving them both together (beyond 2008) would be more of a mess since Colvin isn't that good in pass coverage, and you have to work in some youth with the 30+'s that are carrying the defense.

Colvin would be a decent fit, but he really doesn't improve our team top to bottom very much, and would presumably eat a lot of money.

Now if we could get him for 1/3 the price of Briggs, I'd be singing a different tune.

Had to say it, didn't you Quake? Very angry face

Either way I don't get where people keep saying the guy is hurt all the time. At least get it right. He's been hurt recently. Before last year he had played in 16 games a year for three straight years. Also the guy got 10.5 sacks for two years in a row, playing at the traditional OLB spot in what I believe to be Blaches defense, but don't hold me to the Blache part.

I would imagine that he would have enough speed to play the Will spot which I believe is where Rocky plays. Plus he's use to being a backup. At the right price I think he's a great addition. Probably worth a contract thats slightly less then what we gave London Fletcher last year. However the market for a guy that has experience with one: rushing the passer and two: playing in both a 3-4 and a 4-3 is probably going to be more then we can afford at the moment.

Personally I like it if we can afford him. At the very least I expect us to make a run for him, but like Peter King said earlier our front office is going to be more willing to walk away.

Not many. If I remember right Keenan McCardell and Randel Godfrey signed for it last year, but both were considering retirement so those are the type of guy that you get for the veteran minimum. Also I think Quake was joking about offering the veteran minimum.

Either way I think the guys around here don't understand that in the NFL throwing that word around as often as its thrown around here is a great way to insult players and agents and burn bridges that you don't want burned. Part of the reason people didn't want to play for the Cardinals for so many years was because they were considered cheap.

The Redskins have their own problems but paying players fair market to above fair market value is not one of them.

Theres always going to be that armchair GM around here that thinks he's smart for saying we should only offer him the veteran minimum, but if you see him just let it be. Chances are he doesn't know what hes talking about. I say if you think a players going to cost to much, own up to it, and say it.

please substitute the phrase "impact players" with "quality depth"...

sorry

I just saw this on NFL Network. It kind of surprised me. But he's had two MAJOR injuries the last few years so I'm not too sure. I wonder if he and Blache go back when Colvin was at Chi. I know it's tempting cause when healthy he probably is a better pass rusher than anyone we currently have. But I say we pass.

Yeah they were together back in Chi-town.
