Kelly Washington

A WR who may become available:

Donít expect the Patriots to pick up the $4 million option they have on WR Kelley Washington. In his first year as a Patriot, the former Bengal failed to catch a pass, as he was buried on the Patriotsí depth chart. However, the Pats value his tremendous special-teams contributions and would be happy to keep him on board if heís willing to accept a reduced salary.

The Way We Hear It - NFL pro football rumors and insider news from Pro Football Weekly

Kelley Washington

This is a relatively young guy (28), good size 6-3, 215, who has been buried on a couple of rosters. In Cinci, he was behind CJohnson, TJ Who's Your Mama and Chris Henry (who, despite being a d-bag, was a pretty good WR). In NE he was behind Moss, Welker, Stallworth.

Not saying this guy is a sure No.1 or even No.2; I do think that he is at worst a replacement for J. Thrash. Good special teams, and when given the chance in Cinci, due to Henry's suspension - he flashed some ability.

Not sure of any bad PR on the guy. Worst thing you can say is that given the opportunity he hasn't been able to step up and even be a No.3 in Cinci and in NE he couldn't beat out Stallworth or the other NE receivers to even crack the no. 4 spot consistently. Also, he may just be one more body comparable to what we already have on the roster. My gut says, however, he could be a breakout WR waiting to happen.

I have always liked the guy and think, if he a) can be had at a reasonable price; and b) is willing to leave NE - might be worth a flyer. Assuming he has the ability I think he does, He and Moss could be good combo as a pair of No. 1-2 WR's (i.e. not quite a pure No.1, but better than the average No.2).

Just a thought.

He's a local guy from Winchester, VA too.

I vaguely remember him at Tenn. Thought he was a pretty good prospect. Since the Pats didn't keep Stallworth, they might be considering giving him more of a shot.

Yeah, he went to Sherando HS in Stephens City. I don't like the way he dances, though.

Re: Kelly Washington

Wasn't this guy a high pick?
I remember him from a few drafts back.
Kid has ability...my concern is signing another WR with "potential" aka Lloyd.

I'd say he could make a good #3 potentially...so thats the kinda money he should get.
Is it possible for a breakout year...certainly...but thats a gamble we already lost on.
If we are gunna gamble on that...I'd prefer we do it with someone in the draft that hasn't tried and failed yet.

I wouldn't be completely opposed if we gave him a modest deal for depth only.
I still say, if we go WR....we need a true #1...if we go depth...it should be with someone that knows the system or is a possesion receiver.

AKA DJ Hackett, also how would you guys feel if we signed Hackett and drafted a WR in the second or 3rd round

He was drafted out of Tenn by Cinn but I think he was a 3rd or 4th rounder cause he was often hurt. But he got beat out by Chris Henry. I'd say we leave him alone. I'd rather we go after Stallworth or Hackett. At least those two have shown they can produce when healthy.

Re: Kelly Washington

Man we're gonna get a thread on every available WR over 6-1. This is starting to look like ES. Oh well, at least no one has suggested we trade Portis for McFadden. However at this rate we're going to see threads for Drew Carter, Justin Gage, Aaron Moorehead, and Justin McCariens.

Re: Kelly Washington

He was an absolute stud at Tennessee, even though he was injured his last year. A lot of you may forget, but he was on the cover of either ESPN the magazine or SI. (I got both at the time and forgot which one he had an entire section dedicated to him). It went on about his amazing work ethic and his physical stature for college. He was built like a linebacker. Since he was drafted, he has not been given the chance to succeed. He could do some serious damage for us. I love the idea! He's a cheap alternative, and as long as we actually throw to him, he'll prove to be valuable.

Yeah I remember him being a stud at Tenn. But more than any other position, wr's seem to have the toughest time adjusting to the pro game. And for some reason Washington just hasn't been able to get over the hump. But hey, it's worth a look. Bring him in and let him compete. But Hackett knows the offense, he knows the HC, and he produced when healthy last year. I think that potential move makes the most sense.

Haha, yeah, it is pretty goofy. Notice he scored against the Redskins, though.

I think that was the game Portis got hurt in during the preseason.

I like Hackett, don't get me wrong, but he has been given every chance to be the man in Seattle and he didn't do it. Unlike Washington who was never given the chance. To me, it's all about opportunity. There are plenty of good wr's that ride the pine their entire career because they were never given the chance to succeed. Washington is in that bunch if you ask me. He runs decent routes, has good hands, and has very good size (6'3"). He also is only 27, will be 28 in August, so he has time to develope into a very good wr.
I won't complain if we get Hackett, I think that will be a decent signing for us, but if you compare the two, who will demand the most money? Of course it's Hackett. I'm just not convinced that Hackett will produce more than Washington if given equal chances.

You make it seem like the guy got buried on depth charts by no fault of his own. I realize the response will be that there were very talented WR corps in those places, but at some point you have to figure that the reason a guy has not been given an opportunity to produce is because he didn't deserve the opportunity. I'll put more weight on the decisions of personel guys in New England and (even) Cincinnatti. How often do you see guys produce nothing and then go to another team to become a star? You can think of a few (Ryan Grant, Ahman Green ... maybe Chester Taylor - and of course some back-up QB's - Hasselbeck, etc.) but typically guys that can produce and have ability get opportunities to do so.
