Re: Bryant Johnson Scheduled to Visit Redskins

Well lets see what Scout Inc have to say about Johnson.
2007 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 65 | Key
Alert: None

Comment: Johnson is well-built, physical and fast. He has quality tools and a good feel for the game. He can find voids in coverage when a play breaks down. He knows how to use his size and strength to create separation. He is a solid intermediate target. He has decent hands and can be an effective route runner. But Johnson's focus and consistency need to improve. He sometimes appeared frustrated with his role as Arizona's No. 3 receiver last season. His play seemed lackadaisical at times. He will peek at defenders around him in traffic and drop balls as a result. He muffs easy catches due to poor concentration. He makes many of the plays he should, but he doesn't offer much big-play ability. He doesn't play up to his timed speed. His effort as a route runner and downfield blocker could be better. He could be even more physical and a little tougher.

69-60: Average Starter
A valuable roster player but is not dominant against the better players he faces on a week-to-week basis... Gives great effort and you are glad that he is on your team, but he may or may not go to the next level

Johnson lights it up. He runs good routes, has good hands, and is a big presence in the redzone. I don't know if he will solve our problems, but his potential is still very high. He didn't have the best stats in Arizona, but look who was throwing him the ball, Lienart and Washed up Warner. Pair him up with a good QB and I think good things will happen. Definetly an upgrade over Caldwell in my opinion.
But Boldin and Fitzgerald didn't do so bad with Warner and Leinart throwing to them.

Re: Bryant Johnson Scheduled to Visit Redskins

I am really not sold on Johnson at all. I just don't see him being any better than Reche Caldwell. I say draft a WR, it is a pretty deep class there for the first 3 rounds

I don't want to come off too negative on Santana becasue I do like him. However, I do not consider him a #1 WR. There have been stretches where he has played like a #1...mostly in 2005, but there are also stretches where he completely dissapears from the offense. I think he lacks the consistency to be a true #1. JC needs a WR where when the game is on the line he can trust him enough to throw the ball up knowing that his guy will make the play. I think currently in that situation JC would want to throw it up for Cooley.

One of the most powerful attributes for a QB is the ability to create his own elite recievers. If Zorn is able to get as much out of JC as he was able to get out of Matt Hasselback then it won't really matter whos out there at WR. Brady went without a decent Recieving threat for most of his career. And think, while Wes Welker is a good receiver, do you think he gets the same kind of prouduction if he stays in Miami?

Randy Moss was practically useless in Oakland without a top rated passer giving him the ball.

Anthony Gonzalez had a pretty good rookie campagin, but what do you think happens to him if he gets drafted by Atlanta, Carolina, or KC?

David Patten got 792 yards last year. You think that Colston and Henderson develop into anything if they go to a team with mediocre QB play?

There will always be Receivers that make plays no matter who the QB is. You can look at guys like Chad Johnson, Steve Smith, A. Boldin, and L. Fitgerald and know that they could put up a 1,000+ yards even if a fan that won a halftime ticket stub contest was throwing to them. Theres a good chance that all of the guys that we'll have a chance to acquire in the next two won't be that kind of player, however if we develop Jason Campbell and give him the protection he needs up front (B. Albert plug) then it won't matter if we sign Johnson or Hacket, the offense will still be able to produce.

Here's some more:

Democrat & Chronicle: Bills

Quote:
Johnson, who has plans to visit other teams, including the Washington Redskins, said he wouldn’t mind if those plans got canceled after liking what he saw and heard in Buffalo. He said his agent would speak with Bills officials about a potential contract.

Guess you didn't see Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne and Chris Chambers on that list.

So there were 3? Moss and Chambers are not great receivers.

Moss could be if he ever stays healthy.

Santana is the man! He is a # 1 reciever in my opinion, when he has a vet. qb he is hard to stop unless he is double covered. Funny how he got right back into it when Collins took over. We'll see if Campbell comes around soon, which may not happen with another new offense. Anyway I like Johnson, but only for the right price.

See, I like Caldwell too, but he and Moss aren't going to form a formidable 1-2 punch at wideout. And this is one of the tough spots we're in: Draft a wideout and wait 2 or 3 seasons before he becomes a viable threat, or spend valuable cap space, and risk the bust/bad chemistry possibility with a free agent.

Either way, we've got to do something at wide receiver. The group we have now just won't cut it.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. Moss's 2005 season was spectacular, but that was three years ago. I think many of us are hung up on that magical year and believe that was who Santana Moss is every season. The reality is, he hasn't come close to that performance, and in some ways he's regressed.

Can we afford to wait a year and make a push in 2009 for a free agent like TJ Houshmandzadeh or Marques Colston?

Re: Bryant Johnson Scheduled to Visit Redskins

Another year of Moss and Cooley being our most dangerous receiving threats? I guess if they're prepared for another mediocre offense, yes -- but if we're going to wait for 2009 we might as well draft somebody and ride out the WR learning curve.

Or maybe we have someone already on the roster who will come out of nowhere and knock our socks off.

I think the team should go after free agents like Johnson or Hackett, who are true free agents and not other team's refuse. I think either of these two players would be a good compliment to Moss and ARE. They are not #1 WRs, but at least they can compliment our two best receivers (and Cooley).

Right now the only true #1 WR in the market is Javon Walker....otherwise, we would need to trade for CJ (too expensive and unlikely), larry fitzgerald (a possibility, since it is the cardinals we're talking about) and Roy Williams (pretty unlikely...although we could fool the Lions into taking a 5th round pick if available LOL).
