Who Gets Cut Before or After June 1/Salary Cap Day?!

The draft is over, but the next big date is the beginning of June when teams release players for salary cap relief. Many times after teams draft for depth, they can now "afford" to release certain players that have been a strain on their salary cap.

This is why I believe the Redskins did not address the D-Line, LB, and O-Line positions during the draft like everyone thought they would. I believe that the Skins will target veteran talent to fill need at these critical positions. There should be substantial talent available around this time, and I firmly believe the Redskins braintrust will be active here, just like in the draft.

This may require some research, but here are the questions that I pose to The Warpath:

1) Which players, that will be June cap casualties, do you think the Skins will pick up?

&

2) Who do you believe the Redskins will release come June?

Discuss.

No one. They could have already been released already for the same cap effect.

Thats not true.

I dont feel like getting into it, but the NFL set a date to give a break to teams taht cut players before a certain date in June.

We took advantage of that when we let Jeremiah Trotter and his huge contract go. Look it up.

GTripp is correct.

Brandon Lloyd was an example, we already released him, allowing him to sign on with the Bears (have fun, Lovie), but he was designated a post-June 1 move, allowing us to spread his dead cap money over two seasons.

Each NFL team can do this with up to two players per season. This is a rule adopted into the most recent version of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

In other words, if any June 1 casualties were going to hit, they've already been released from their teams.

Besides, few teams are in dire need of cap relief. There just aren't June 1 casualties like there used to be.

We can now trim the WR logjam down by getting rid of Thrash, I would keep Mix since he would be like another draft pick to us since he has not played. We still need to address the Dee, without giving away any of next year's dfrat picks. The draft is the way to build a team.

I hate it when people order me to discuss things. As this is an interesting topic to me, I may join in the substantive discussion at some point, but I am feeling put off by the requirement that I discuss this topic. Perhaps I will withhold my brilliance just out of spite.

See, you're making me spiteful - now, I am really displeased.

Apparently, there is a misunderstanding. We are saying the same things about the June salary cap date, but in a different manner.

The questions and principle still stand. Now that teams have drafted talent, teams will begin to release players up until & after the first week in June, and in the interest of creating more space to sign rookies and UDFA, there will be cuts.

So who do we release(and we WILL release a player or two), and who do we pick up when teams start to trim their rosters according to cap constraints?

91, it's not a good idea to challenge the cap guys when it comes to anything that deals with the salary cap. They're right about 97% of the time.

Re: Who Gets Cut After June 1/Salary Cap Day?!

If there are any teams that need or want to release players because they feel they acquired a better one in the draft, or they need to get rid of them to create cap space for the rookies, we will see it happen sometime in May, teams don't have to wait until June 1st anymore.

What are you talking about? The OP asked some questions about players who could become available. What's with the "order you to discuss things" and "put off by the requirement that I discuss things" comments? I must be missing something.

??????? I can see Thrash getting cut because he is old and there is a major logjam at wr, but why would we cut ARE? We have no depth at DE so why would we cut Daniels? Todd Wade has a very reasonable contract for a veteran lineman who can still play so I don't get that one either?

I hope the Skins keep Thrash, he's a fairly solid player and what I consider to be a team guy and a "True Redskin". Solid, hard playing, and a good guy.

Did anyone notice ESPN's list of team losses and additions? I had to chuckle when Brandon Llyod was listed as a key loss.

OK, he can be a cap guy, and I was not challenging him. I was just saying something that everyone already knows. After a certain point, teams will being to release players. How could they not release players when they pick up 7+ players in the draft? These players can be a bargain and be adequate replacements for veterans with hefty contracts.

Except for a few new additions to CBA, there will be a litany of roster moves after the draft, leading up to and after training camp. That is all I am saying.

If no one gets released, then I am in the 97%, but if players do begin to become available after being released, like I know they will, then consider this the 3%.
