Oakland Raiders Fans Should Stop Hating on Stuart Schweigert | Bleacher Report

Oakland Raiders: Stuart Schweigert Speaks Out About His Release | Bleacher Report

Here are two articals I found that make him sound potentially really promissing. The second one is him defending himself, and talks about the "cover 0", which i had never heard of before today. Also read somethings about how hes a more natural SS, which is what I guess he will be used as here. Sounds like either way hell be at least very good depth, and will allow us to drop Fox, allowing us to still have good experience at safey and get us younger and bigger too.

Did you see him in the race video with Clinton Portis? Landry certainly looks in shape to me, he looked absolutely chiseled. Not to mention fast as hell.

Landry's going to have a huge year, he's definitely nothing to worry about.
Well I'm certainly not questioning Landry's athleticism or his "chiseled"-ness. However, I think skipping OTAs as a second year player with a new coaching staff is indicative that Landry's maturity might not be keeping up with his athletic ability. It's certainly his choice since OTAs are not mandatory, but from what the WaPo says Zorn was less than impressed with the decision. I might also point out that it is a decision that fits with what we know of Landry so far. He is a great athlete on the field and made some plays that other guys could not, but he also displayed a lack of discipline in games against Arizona, Chicago, New York Jets, and New York Giants with late hits and taughting penalties (against Plaxico Burress) that were unnecessary and extended opponents drives. He's also skipped out on much of the offseason workout routine and has routinely blown off committments he has made at autograph signings. It just seems to speak to a bit of a pattern that would indicate to me he still has some growing up to do and that he might be thinking of himself as a superstar player just a tad bit earlier than he should.

He was a 3rd round pick, he's only 26, and started all of 2006 and most of 2007 until he got hurt. And Oakland has had a solid D the last few years. I see no reason why he can't press Doughty for a chance as a starter.

For some reason I can't edit post after I leave a thread, but oh well.

Anyway after scanning the message boards and the comments on RI the fanbase is desperate to secretly replace Doughty and personally I'm starting to think the main reason is because he's not Sean Taylor. Usually when I hear fans saying "oh so and so is going to push guy b" it usually means they want so and so to replace guy b without actually saying it outright.

Personally it's annoying, but in looking into this move, the best comparison would probably be Peirson Preilou. For now Schweigert will be the main backup safety while the team waits for Kareem Moore to develop. On the other hand it looks like Scott and Horton won't make the final cut, but I'm pretty sure the team is intent on keeping Moore.

On second thought injuries to Moore will give Horton a pretty good chance of making the team.

Justin Scott was released about three weeks ago. IMO Schweigert is going to be our starting FS, and Landry is going to move back to SS. Doughty is more of a SS and if it's true that Landry is moving back to SS, than Doughty is going to be his backup because I don't Doughty has the skill set to be a FS. So what I am looking at for the safety position this season is: Landry/Doughty at SS, Schweigert/Moore at FS, and either Horton or Fox making the cut as the fifth safety.

This is a solid move. I think we are really shoring up the safety position with quality depth. I believe Stuart Scheweigert will be a strong contender for a starting role at FS.

Honestly I believe he is going to be the starter come opening day. He has the experience and I believe he has the skills. Especially if they are moving Landry back to SS, I think he is the best qualified on our roster to play FS.

re: Stuart Schweigert a Redskin

I dont know about this guy specifically...but I aint suprised that they brought in a safety with NFL experience..it is very likely he will be our 2nd or 3 safety at worst.
And that...my friends, said a lot about our thin experience at safety.

Now all we need is depth with a starting quality OLB and I think we'll be good to start the season.
I wouldn't mind a starting quality DT too.

I hope that is not the case.. From what I have seen last few Redskins games when Landry moved to FS - he flourished greatly.. He was free to move around, able to hit and put fear in receivers.. Not only he was able to roam the field but he also showed that he have the ability to be ballhawk.. I certainly hope Landry will stay as FS..

I also like the way LL handled the FS duties after the passing of Sean. I did go back and watch the Redskins OTA players video clip from today and it appears that Stuart Scheweigert has at least been told he will compete for the FS position. He mentioned that he was under the understanding that LL had the SS position covered......

Either way LL is fine in either Safety role. But I sure do think he came on strong at the end of last season as the ball hawk, hard hitting, closing ground quickly (mini ST in the backfield) FS.

I guess we shall have to stay tuned to this one.

I agree Landry did excel at FS, but he excelled at SS as well. You have to remember we drafted Landry to be a SS. He definitely has the skill set to excel at either position, so to our benefit it doesn't really matter where we put him. At SS we can use Landry to blitz more often, which is his strong-suit, IMO moving Landry back to SS won't change his ballhawking or hitting ability very much, as you might remember Landry had plenty of nice hits, and plenty of opportunites to intercept passes when he played SS last year. To me it breaks down like this: If Doughty is going to start Landry will be at FS, if Schweigert is going to start Landry will be at SS. Like I said earlier I don't think it matters what safety position Landry is playing at, he's still going to be able to perform as a Pro Bowl caliber player.
