It really never was...after his rookie season there were reports that he "seriously considered" retiring.

Just an FYI, McNabb in his second season (and mind you he only started in 6 games in his first season) he threw for 3365 yards, and had 27 total tds to 13 ints. That something that Young's wildest wet dreams are made of.

Vince Young is no McNabb, never will be. He's a Michael Vick type player.

I think VY can be a solid NFL QB, but he needs to get a thicker skin and understand that he's going to need to work very hard at technique and in the filmroom. Hopefully he takes this as a learning experience and comes back a better and more mature player.
You're absolutely right.
However, while I do feel they owe us nothing, if not for us, they would not have that lucrative contract. We are the reason they are in business.

That's exactly right. HE's a Vick type player and that kind of QB technique doesnt work in the NFL. He's got tons of talent but its not the kind of talent that works well for an NFL QB. Looking at young NFL QBs, if its a college game I want a VY type QB but in a pro game a want a Matt Ryan type QB. Ryan's skill set is more suited to the NFL game.

I think VY suffers from depression, and as a person that suffers from it as well i can only imagine the effects of having thousands of people booing you weigh on your soul. The man is human...lets not call him insane, or that his mama needs to get it in check or whatver. Perhaps hes not as insensitive and as cold as 80% of the people that walk this earth right now. We boo our players when they throw a pick or have a bad game..but do we ever think of how that affects them? Does it just feed the lingering doubts they have? Look at JC...we have bashed him after one game and the interview i saw of him it looked like the criticism had really taken its toll. Sure you are a professional athelete grown some thick skin...but its not that easy..
WE as fans need to stop the bashing sometimes and rally around to support people...i think you would find they would grow alot better with support instead of negativity.

DD, while I completely agree with your post, and depression is a rough deal........that ain't gonna' happen. There are FEW jobs in the world more volatile, or subject to extreme pressure than the life of an NFL qb. Not to mention the harsh reality of dealing with the fans. Unfortunately for him, he chose it and has accepted $$$$$ to deliver the goods. If he cannot produce, he will have to go, and deal with his problem. If something like that scenario occurs and he has to leave, who know's, maybe you never recover.
Sad...I hope he can get it back, AND BE TOUGH enough to deal with this life

re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'

Is VY done in this league, anyones guess....? But it would not be a surprise to say the least.

IS YOUNG DONE?
Posted by Mike Florio on September 13, 2008, 6:31 p.m.

The recent post from MDS regarding Peter King’s report that Titans quarterback Vince Young has lost the locker room (by the way, Eddie George says the same thing on FSN’s PFP . . . check your local listing for the next showing) convinces us that, barring a dramatic turn of events, Young will never play football again for the Tennessee Titans, and possibly never play again for any team.

We firmly believe that Young would retire right now (and very well might have quit the game after his rookie year) if he didn’t have to pay back a big chunk of the bonus money he received when he signed his contract with the team in 2006. And we’re now thinking that the Titans’ best move is to enter an agreement with Young pursuant to which he can retire without repayment obligation, and that he’d have to pay the money back only if he ever signs a contract with another NFL team.

Of course, if Young retires, the Titans could keep him from ever playing for another team by refusing to release him from the reserve/retired list.

With the locker room lost, and with Young certain to face constant verbal harassment from opposing players on the field, this situation will not improve absent some heroic action on Young’s part (perhaps by throwing a pigskin a quarter-mile) to change his teammates’ minds.

Even if he can win back his teammates, he’ll still have to constantly face defenders who believe that, if they frazzle him sufficiently, he’ll fall to pieces.

On a separate note, there was a report/rumor on Eagles-focused site GCobb.com that Young had gone missing again on Friday night, and that police were again looking for him. We haven’t been able to confirm or conclusively debunk this rumor, and while Garry Cobb has done a good job in the past of nailing Eagles’ scoop, Cobb’s suggestion that one of his friends who has friends on the Titans “told me that head coach Jeff Fisher and the police were looking for Young again and there was a fear that he was going to do something bad to himself” is the kind of thing that could prompt no one to ever listen to anything he has to say about any team other than the Eagles, if the report/rumor is incorrect.

Then again, it’s possible that Cobb is right on the money, and that the Titans have managed to completely cover this one up, just as they managed to hide some of the details of Monday night’s incident.

And we don’t blame them for trying to cover this stuff up. In a case like this, disclosure of the truth would only make it harder to Vince Young to continue his career.

Then again, given what we and everyone already know, we think it’s too late for that to happen, and that things are likely to only get worse if/when Young tries to play again.

re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'

This sucks for Vince. My question is, if he is such an obvious head case, how was this not picked up on in any way prior to him being drafted so high? I wonder if he knew all along he wanted a big pay day but didn't want to play, or if he really wanted to play but only now is finding out he just can't handle it? This is a pretty unique and unfortunate situation.

Re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'

I think Vince truly believes his play is being affected by his mental state, but I see these as two seperate problems. This is Vince Young the Quarterback, this is what you are getting from him.

His depression might seem like it's making him struggle to throw the football, but I see it as a simple by product of poor play for a man who really, really wants to succeed in this league. It's a hard bullet to swallow and he's only 25.

It will be interesting to see if he stays with it.

Re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'

I've always heard Young was a good guy. So while I was against his play, I am not happy to hear about his mental issues.

Re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'

I understand that he makes a lot of money, but most QBs who come into the league get a bunch of time to learn before starting so that they can make their mistakes out of the public eye. I would think it would be very difficult to start so early in your career, before you're really ready, in terms of skills. He took one for the team by becoming the starting QB so early in his career. By doing so, he opened himself up to undue criticism by being judged when he really hadn't gotten any on-the-job training. I think he needs some time as a backup so that they can work on his mechanics (plus), which I assume would be difficult to do if you had to also perform on Sundays.
I remember having some of my violin teachers change my technique and I sure as hell didn't want to have a recital any time soon afterwards.
