If we don't get Cutler, should we extend Campbell?

In the event that we aren't able to acquire Cutler from the Broncos for an obscene package of picks and players, should we extend Campbell's contract as a show of commitment? We've already shown a lack of confidence in him by not extending him prior to now. Depending on who you believe, we've shopped him for a 2nd round pick and/or have offered him in a trade for Cutler. Without an extension, we'd be setting him up to be the biggest lame duck in NFL history and expecting him to lead our offense into 2009. I'm not advocating either way, but it's worth discussing.

I'm not dead but this team is dead to me...but now that McCloughan is here they may have new life!

Jay Gruden = Zorny McSpurrier
Kirk Cousins = Next Grossman

Well, yes, of course. But if that was even a remote consideration, even a passing interest in Cutler wouldn't make any sense.

It's just one of those days where you look at the situation developing, and just wonder why we ever thought we were past these days.

Re: If we don't get Cutler, should we extend Campbell?

Should the Skins fail to acquire Cutler, I don't see Campbell extending his contract. Would you want to extend with a team that clearly doesn't want you? At this point, I think Snyder HAS to make this trade happen (sort of the same situation Denver is in now with Cutler). It's too bad, I really like Campbell.

HAIL!

Re: If we don't get Cutler, should we extend Campbell?

No, we should not. It would make us look even more schizophrenic. First we said we had no interest in Cutler and JC is our guy (but no new contract). Then we go back on that and decide we're interested in Cutler, which shows we were pretty much lying and obviously not too confident in JC. So then if we don't get the guy we just announced we really want, we should pretend it never happened and extend the QB we just tried to shop becuase of lack of confidence? My head is spinning. I miss Coach Joe's influence on this one.

pshhh...this situation seems so f'd right now I doubt it matters what we offer JC. I mean if Snyder does this it will be the 2nd time in just two years he's handled the team w/o a shred of integrity: whether you liked Gregg Williams for HC or not the way Snyder and his minions tried to throw him under the bus w/ all the crap about Gregg dissing Gibbs etc, well any honest person should see how deplorable that was. Now Snyder let's HC Zorn give JC his blessing before pulling the rug out from under the whole thing to grab a QB of similar skill/talent who's done little more than whine about his plight. This is f'd IMHO...

Retarted thread. lol jk.

ummm, we might have to as a peace offering. However I think it's a safe bet that the Skins will get Cutler. They will outbid everyone unless someone is willing to offer 3 first round picks. I have a feeling we will offer two. The good news is we could possibly get a late 2nd round pick so at least we could do something about our Line needs.

extend him to give him confidence? that's stupid; players almost always perform better on contract years.

Dirtbag, no one is going to give us shit for Campbell. That's the problem here. If every team values Campbell like we do, we'll have to release him next week or so.

When you have an asset that needs to mature, you hold onto to it. That business 101. Cutler's value is at an all time high, and we're actually considering doing that.

I think it will be the 13th pick, a second rounder in 2010, and Carlos Rogers for Jay Cutler. At which point, Campbell becomes a sunk cost.

Essentially, if I'm predicting correctly we give up two great young players, the chance at two more great young players, and do it all to get one great young player. That's essentially how it's going to break down.

That pretty much sums it up for me. This whole situation makes me :vomit:

Re: If we don't get Cutler, should we extend Campbell?

I'm sure i've stated this before, but the downside to not extending his contract is if he has a killer year. then we are just raped by his new contract. while on one hand i guess that's a good problem to have, resigning a probowl player. downside is he gonna want a ton of moolah.

Re: If we don't get Cutler, should we extend Campbell?

What the hell are we doing here? Can we have just one normal off season. Jason Campbell can be just as an effective QB as Jay Culter if he is surrounded by the right talent. There is no way that we should give up any picks for Jay Culter, we have more glaring needs on this team that we should focus on. After everyone in the Redskins organization swore that they had no intrest in Culter and to have this story come and stab Jason in the back is why we are known as the ass clowns of the league. I can only hope and pray that this story is not true and they are just using the Redskins to generate intrest from other teams. Wait, who am I kidding....
I feel sorry for Jason right now.

I sure hope you're wrong about Rogers. He's starting to come into his own (minus the dropped INTs) and pairing him with D-Hall makes them both better. This whole thing makes me sick.

HAIL!

I would rather he prove he's earned the pay day, then reassure him that i think he can.

Dude please. Your are so not smurt. We'll get every pick in the first round in exchange for Campbell. Hell we could trade Campbell to China and that would wipe out our debt with our easturn neabors.

In all honesty though I agree that Campbell isn't worth more then a 3rd rounder at best but I think he'll be exchanged as more of a courtesy. I keep getting the feeling though that Matt Leinart might be the Bronocs QB next year though if the trade is a three way deal.

Seriously. I mean, it amazes me sometimes that a few fans like us can figure out the irrationality of some of the bullshit the Redskins pull. What a circus our FO is.

Albert Einstein's definition of insanity: Repeating the same behavior over and over and expecting different results.
