Posted by Mike Florio on May 2, 2010 9:29 PM ET
Veteran assistant coach Bob Karmelowicz, who spent 2009 as the defensive line coach in Detroit, has died at the age of 60. The Lions announced Karmelowicz's passing on Sunday.
"On behalf of the William Clay Ford Family and the entire Detroit Lions organization, we offer our sincere sympathies to the Karmelowicz family," Lions CEO Tom Lewand said.
"Bob touched many lives throughout his years of coaching and positively impacted the careers of countless players at both the collegiate and professional level. While he was only with the Lions for one season, his contributions to our team last year were greatly appreciated and he will be missed by all of us."
Prior to joining the Lions, Karmelowicz spent three years with the Texans, nine with the Chiefs, three with the Redskins, and two with the Bengals.
Before joining the NFL in 1992, Karmelowicz spent three years at the University of Miami, two at Washington State, one at UNLV, one at Texas-El Paso, one at Massachusetts, and five at Arizona State.
With the Hurricanes, Karmelowicz helped Warren Sapp begin to make the transition from tight end to defensive tackle. Karmelowicz also coached Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson at Miami.
"There's no greater feeling than moving a man from Point A to Point B, against his will." #68
