Re: Russ Grimm On Canton, Hot Dogs, and The Hogs

My wife and I just drove up from NoVA just to see Grimm's induction! Man, he deserves it. Hope a few more of the Hogs make it; there would have no Diesel and no three Lombardis without the Hogs!

Re: Russ Grimm On Canton, Hot Dogs, and The Hogs

'Bout time Russ made it in. Was listening to George Starke yesterday (another Hog for the younger guys) and he made a very good point. He said how could Randy White get in before Russ and Russ would get the best of him every time, yet he has to wait all these years to get into the Hall. He said the same thing about Irvin and Monk.

I think in general the Redskins teams of the 80s just don't get the respect they deserve like the 49ers teams from the same era. My own personal theory is had we beat the Raiders in the Super Bowl, I think the Skins would be considered the undisputed team of the 80s.

I've been arguing that point with 49ers fans for years, if only Joey T. would have kept his peepee in his pants...

Re: Russ Grimm On Canton, Hot Dogs, and The Hogs

I love this from Mike Wise article:

washingtonpost.com

"We're getting ready to ice the game," Joe Theismann remembered that day against Dallas at RFK Stadium, Jan. 22, 1983. "We're linin' up. And Russ and Randy White had been at it all day. I mean this is a war. This is a physical, UFC, battle royal.

"So all of a sudden I get in the huddle and I call '60 Outside.' And Russ looks at me and he says, 'No.' "

Which made Theismann do a double-take.

"I said, 'What do you mean no? Joe [Gibbs] wants to run 60 Outside.'

"He says, 'I want to run '50 Gut' right at Randy [White, the Cowboys' Hall of Fame defensive tackle].'

"Well now I gotta make an executive decision, you know, I'm middle management."

They ran the play Grimm, not Gibbs, wanted. White was run over and the Redskins gained four yards. Theismann looked back toward Joe Gibbs, two weeks before he guided the franchise to their first of three Super Bowls. The coach wanted his play run.

"Joe signals in 60 Outside," Theismann said.

"I step in the huddle. I go, 'Spread right, short motion, 60 Outside.'

"Russ goes: 'Didn't you hear me? No!'

"I said, 'Okay, fine.' We run 50 Gut again."

And White goes to the ground again. First down.

"Next play, I don't even look at the sidelines anymore," Theismann said. "We ran like 11 consecutive 50 Guts. It was just Russ Grimm against Randy White and we were going to absolutely pummel him to the ground. When I think of Russ Grimm and all the memories, this was his moment."

"I always felt the huddle wasn't a democracy," Theismann added, "until that particular time."

Former Redskins tackle George Starke reminisced by telephone Thursday night as he was awaited his storm-delayed flight from Washington to Canton. "Nine of those times we ran it right up Randy's [behind]," he said.

Before every play, Starke recalled, ornery center Jeff Bostic looked at White across the line: "He said, 'Randy, you better dig in, we're coming again right at you,' " Starke said of Bostic. "He had a nasty-ass attitude. I loved Jeff.

"Then after every play, Mark May would kick Randy White in the butt because he didn't like him," Starke recalled. "Randy would punch Russ, who would get angry. Then we'd do it all over again."

Re: Russ Grimm On Canton, Hot Dogs, and The Hogs

Russ did a great job and it was great to see the first Hog go into the HOF.
I have to say I was impressed by Floyd Little's speech and as much as I hated him as a player Emmit did a good job tonight too. Although that "America's Team" crap made me want to throw up in my mouth a little bit.

HAIL TO RUSS and HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!

Guys like Russ and Art were not ones to toot their own horns. They showed up and played football and let their actions both on and off the field speak for themselves. Irvin was a good player but Art should have gone in long before he did, but of course I am biased.

Loved Buges' intro. He told his own version of the 50 Gut story. But I loved the bottom line: running over Randy White 10 times in a row!

Re: Russ Grimm On Canton, Hot Dogs, and The Hogs

Anyone else a little bothered by Jerry's Hall of Fame speech? I mean in the course of his speech he mentioned that:

- His Dad never said "I love you."
- He was constantly in fear of failure
- His parents whooped him
- His High School Principle whooped him

And that was only in the course of one or two minutes. It's amazing that Jerry turned out as classy as he did.

Re: Russ Grimm On Canton, Hot Dogs, and The Hogs

The 50 Gut story is Outrageous!! It is incredible to see a "Hog" in the HOF. I would love to see our O-Line unit take the kind of pride in themselves and their performance as their predecessors in the Hogs did.....we shall see

People probably wanted to post but then they played the Rickey Jackson drinking game. Take a drink for every time he says "hometown" then call me when you wake up in two days.

Re: Russ Grimm On Canton, Hot Dogs, and The Hogs

Grimm's speech and Bugel's intro weremoving for us Skins' fans. What Grimm and the rest of the line did against some formdable defenses of the 1980s was impressive.
Grimm's thanking the Skins' fans was a great tip of the hat given our recent years' drama.
Here's to the heart and soul of the Hogs.

It was a little different and not as polished as I would have expected his speech to be, but then again I was not infront of thousands. He is still a classy guy and was an incredible player.
