One Redskins source on Grossman-as-starter reports: "Truly nobody knows." Will be interesting to hear Shanahan after practice.

for whatever that's worth

Maybe Rex will play like he expects to re-up. He's only on a one year lease.

Re: Rex Grossman Named Starting QB

Grossman played better in the preseason, has been in the offense longer, and has the better arm. I feel that the team has a much better opportunity for big plays with Grossman at the helm.

Beck is on the team and is 2nd string that is a step up from earlier in his career. I am not a fan of pulling your qb during the season so Id let Rex start all season, if you are not happy with him do not re-sign him, let Beck become the starter in 2012 and draft a qb in the 1st round and let him be a back up for a full season.

Re: Rex Grossman Named Starting QB

Seems like they've made the right choice based on what we have seen. Most practice reports had Grossman looking better too iirc

Re: Rex Grossman Named Starting QB

There is talk that Rex isn't the starter. Maybe this is Shanny throwing a smoke screen? I guess we will see after practice?

And let's say they do yank Grossman at the first sign of trouble, then what? Will John Beck just waltz in and tear up like we all imagined? I doubt it. I think Rex has at least 5 games to bench himself or prove he's corrected some of his bad ways.
Of course the answer is not as simple as that. If the offense is mostly clicking - in other words the QB has reasonable time to throw, the WRs are getting open relatively consistently, and the running game is keeping the offense out of 3rd and longs, then you expect your QB to get the job done. And if in that situation Grossman is missing reads or throwing ill-advised picks, or even if he's flat out inaccurate, then I think you make the switch to Beck very quickly. Like after two games. Might as well try to save the season if the QB is the only thing holding the offense back.

But if the QB is under duress, or the WRs are not getting open, or if the running game is getting shut down, then it really doesn't matter who the QB is and you should just let Grossman ride it out.

Luckily I think I have an idea what to expect from Grossman. If he has a strong supporting cast around him he'll get the job done most of the time, save for a few boneheaded mistakes that you would never see from a strong NFL starter. I'm just saying that if "bad Rex" shows for the first 2 or 3 games and you think better QB play would make the difference, then put in Beck and give him a chance.

After all, it's not like any QB move would be stunting the growth of a young guy trying to learn. With both guys being 30, they either have it or they don't.

Hopefully this supporting cast really is better and makes their jobs easier. That would help either one of them out a great deal. But I'm not delusional - I don't believe either of these guys to be the long-term answer. And I don't believe either of them to be appreciably better than the other. So if the QB competition was as close as Shanahan has said all throughout the preseason, then it logically follows that the leash for either is not all that long.

Like I said earlier and you guys thought I was delusional.

Grossman was the starter ever since McNabb got injured, it was always that simple.

No one will know for sure until 4:15 on Sunday, I suppose

Re: Rex Grossman Named Starting QB

I think Rex will be fine as the starter. I don't think it was a coincidence last year that he came in and played so much better than McNabb. I think we are dealing with a guy here who really knows the offense, who really knows his own limitations a whole lot better, and is willing to work hard to keep his job as starter. We really haven't had that before at QB. Brunell was coming off a playoff season and was benched because the team needed a scapegoat. Campbell fared no better. Collins played great, we were a playoff team, but the man-crush on Campbell came back and it was the same old JC again. McNabb could have been good but he was too far gone physically and he didn't want to put in the time or work to pick up the offense.

I am excited about Rex getting another chance as starter. I don't think this is his last chance. I think if he shows he can put up starter numbers, and manage the game, then someone signs him even if the skins do not.

Re: Rex Grossman Named Starting QB

I thought it would be Beck, but not based on anything he did better than Grossman. I only watched one quarter of one preseason game so all I have to go from is what I read. Looking at the schedule, it is not like we are playing any 'world-beater' defenses so the mobility thing is probably not going to be much of a factor. Flip a coin...that is probably what they did. It was tails - the same thing Grossman will be sitting on if he makes too many stupid mistakes.
