I wasn't on Newton's bandwagon at all, especially after his horrible preseason, and true this is one game, but 422 yards and 3 combined touchdowns is impressive, and is only made more impressive that he's a rookie making his first career start. Kudos to him. It remains to be seen if he will be consistent week to week but he certainly couldn't have gotten off to a better start. |

| Re: Mad props to Cam Newton Because Newton can stand in the pocket and throw the football with bodies around him, he's an offensive coordinator's dream. And he's going to be just fine in this league. I don't know if this particular performance is anything special -- I mean 400 yards is a lot of them, but if the debut record was held by say, Ryan Leaf, what would it mean then? Vince Young went 8-5 as a rookie, and it didn't get him anywhere. Newton still has a major learning curve and is going to struggle a lot as a rookie. But Newton was a pass-first guy going back to college, and even without the read option to devastate a college defense, he's still an imposing figure to have to defend. The Panthers are going to win a bunch of games this year with Newton at quarterback. But you need to consider how good their defense is.

Let's see how he's doing in Week 6 once there's some good tape on him out there and DCs have a chance to adjust to him. I think it's very ironic that the player the Panthers should've taken IMO wound up making the play to beat them.

If he can be a good NFL Qb then I need to eat some serious crow, as I was certainly one who did not think he could do it. That being sad....mad props??? what year is this?
