What I don't understand is why the Chiefs would want him in the first place when the QB they have now is a good QB. Now if thier dfence would do something

He's not a QB anymore, he's converted to safety.

"Hey guys, look at me, I can play Safety, I promise! Come on coach, just put me in!!"

What is this, 6th grade?! He's going to have to get over the fact he just isn't going to cut it in the NFL.

Matty:

I might argue that signing Carrier was far worse than bringing Couch in for a look. There is a low probability that Couch will make it as a safety; I grant you that.

Carrier on the other hand was a "proven player" and what he had actually "proven" was that he was through/finished/kaput/over/done/take your pick here. There was really no chance he would be a significant help to a decent team at that point of his career.

I am not saying that Couch is even part of the answer for the Chiefs' miserable defense; he isn't. But he is a zero cost option. He's sort of like the guys that the Redskins signed just after the season was over and they could expand the roster. Most of them are longshots to do anything more than act as cannon-fodder for special teams' practices in training camp. But they don't cost anything...

Couch was a hell of a talent coming out of college, and how many players do you think may have failed in the NFL if they weren't put in the situation they fell into? Tom Brady? Kurt Warner? Both QBs. Both put into perhaps the greatest situations ever. Tom Brady on a strong offense, with a great defense. Kurt Warner had the ability to lob a ball 40 yards, Bruce or Holt would run under it.

I feel that Couch could start for KC starting next season, at safety. Probability? .05%
He's on a team that certainly has the offense to win, in turn making him look better. You play the Cheifs, you could get down quick, causing lots of passes, meaning lots of chances to INT. This is obvious to most everyone. If he's even close to the athelete he used to be, then he has a shot to make it. As far as mentally, that's yet to be seen. I personally believe Ryan Leaf may have been a good QB in the NFL if he were a bit older/mature when he came in. I think physically he was ready, mentally he fell apart. (that won't cause any riots here...)

Initially he did try to convert to WR with the Rams. Then he retired and resurfaced with the Pack trying to play safety. Then he retired again. Now he's back with the Chiefs.
