SI.com's Don Banks reports that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has actually undergone four surgeries on his neck over the past two years, not three, as had been widely reported. The extra procedure took place at some point between his May 23 surgery to repair a bulging disk and the cervical neck fusion that took place Sept. 9.

"In addition," Banks added, "league sources say Manning's neck has potentially developed bone spurs just above the point where his latest fusion surgery took place in early September, and the Colts organization is under the belief that it is nearly inevitable Manning will at some point require further surgery, and possibly another fusion procedure, even if he does successfully return to the field in 2012.

"It's unclear how any potential long-term neck issues will impact Manning's decision to attempt a resumption of his NFL playing career later this year."

Banks goes on to give more details about Manning's attempts to play at the end of the 2011 regular season, which gives some insight into the relationship between Manning and the Colts. Concerns about an aging quarterback with a problematic neck are legitimate for Manning, the Colts and his suitors if he becomes a free agent. An incentive-laden contract seems like the best hope for Manning in 2012.

At this point Peyton should be thinking of his family and the rest of his life. He really should just hang it up.

that maybe true but if it was me that sounds like pretty scary stuff, I bet his wife is saying don't play.

It would be scary if a doctor comes out and say that P. Manning should not play. Last time I checked, Don Banks is not a doctor. I do think Manning must make sure that he is medically ready to play (anywhere) and consider the consequences when he speaks to his doctors. However, as I said before all of this is speculation and rumors from people who are not doctors.

He's so done.... and I honestly think that Allen and Shanahan are not going to go out and get him. Too risky. And for what? A couple of years?? Joe Theismann was right. Let's not do this quick fix BS anymore. With or w/out Manning we're not going to the SB next year so there's no point in signing him.

If they are not going to trade up for RG3 then I agree with this. Unless Blackmon falls to #6 which I do not see happening, but would take all day.

Isn't there a doctor here? Because from what I've heard this latest news is really being blown out of proportion. More surgery? Yeah probably but that could be a minor procedures many years down the road. Bone spurs? Not uncommon and not always such a big deal

cant remember a more smoke and mirrors story in the NFL. information and misinformation from both sides. Irsay just cant keep his mouth shut to the media. Media just gonna driving it until free agency begins.

It also has to be noted that the surgery they are reffering to in the future would be after he is done playing not now.

Also... MARK SCHLARETH came on ESPN yesterday and stated that this "4th surgery" was more of a procedure than an actuall surgery.

Much different in notation. A knee getting drained is a procedure for example, and a repair to a broken bone is a surgery.

This story is so overblown.

What's wrong with developing your young talent in a year or two? I don't understand why people act like we would be getting Manning in a vacuum. I think the health is a big concern, but I would hope that we have competent doctors on our staff that would make a correct assessment on Manning's health.

I have no problem with the team trading up, and I am actually glad that it seems as though the team has the option of either a.) trading up and use the cap room to surround a young QB with the deep crop of FAs this offseason or b.) pick up manning, a developing 2nd round QB, a FA or two, and continue to build through the draft.

Health issues aside, I don't get this stubborn, my way or the highway attitude of people that oppose to Manning's signing. I mean there is NO guarantee that we can trade up to get RG3, with the Browns sitting there with two #1 picks on this year's draft. Just as there is no guarantee that Manning would want to be here.

No point of being at the extreme of these two debates because anything can happen.

B) What medical school is your M.D. degree from?

C) What on earth would keep us from both signing Manning AND drafting a hot young rookie QB?
