Leverage. That's why. Once free agency hits, teams are going to come down from that NFL combine high and start thinking clearly. They'll go out and get somebody free agency and most likely resort to plan B provided that the Rams have turned down their initial offer. So what started out as a potential bidding war, ends up a one man party. Dolphins offer X package. If they are turned down, they go onto plan B of Tannehill/FA veteran. Browns offer Y package. If Rams turn them down, they go onto plan B of Flynn and keep picks. Redskins offer Z package. If Rams turn them down, they go onto plan B of Manning/Cousins. (I'm using the players above as examples, you can fill in your choice of person for each of the team provided) So you can see how quickly your investment(draft pick) is devalued come free agency time. Teams aren't going to sit around and wait till the draft, and by then they'll have already moved on. Smoots already said he heard the Dolphins were out of the running. The team that stands the most to gain in all this is the Vikings.

That said, I imagine teams will be contacting the Vikings next to get a better deal.

Comparatively, now since all are in play the Rams can play offers against each other to raise the price. I tend to think it get done this weekend at a two 1sts, a third and fourth.

- I would like to think that but you'll find people on this board who still want to go out and get the big names - I agree - I won't freak out, but I don't think its the answer, and it can back fire and go under the 'dumb FA' signing column rather than the 'London Fletcher success' signing column

The way I see it, the Redskins have two options, in which they can have the balanced approach: A.) Trade up for RG3, use the limited # of picks you have this draft, and use free agency. B.) Sign Manning, possibly trade down and use your picks for this year, and maybe use free agency. I don't think you can't go wrong with either of these approaches. Both have risks (as with everything) and both have a good probability of working out well.

| Re: Redskins: 2012 Off-Season-Free Agency/Trades Wonder if we'd have any interest in Cortland Finnegan. Tennessee used the franchise tag on Michael Griffin and won't offer Finnegan a contract. Cortland Finnegan: Titans don’t want me, I don’t know why | ProFootballTalk
