He's the sacrificial lamb. Was he the only one doing it? Highly doubtful. Will he be made an example of because he continued after he was told to stop? Yes. I think Scud is right, a minimum 1 year ban sounds about right. They are going to make an example out of him as a warning to any other coaches doing it. It doesn't matter whether you think it's right or wrong, what matters is he intentionally kept breaking a rule thinking there would be no consequences.

i think this will be the biggest factor in determining his punishment. with all the current law suits against the nfl and the many to come, i feel they have to make a stand and show they don't condone this in any way what so ever.

Agreed. But the future is what is really important. Making sure all coaches, staff, FO and all players are 100% clear on the rules and consequences related to this type behavior is more important than investigating acts that go back 3 to 50 years ago. We'll probably soon have ESPN or CNNSI quote a former team janitor say Vince Lombardi used to have a bounty system.
Fix it and stop the finger pointing.
I guess GWillims is the sacrificial example of what will happen.

I think it's really more than just a case of not....really understanding that it isn't "Hoyle" to pony up cash bounties to inflict injury and possibly career ending cheap shots on the competition? That sort of "Really, when did that start" mentality is very......tired.
If you're not bright enough to cease and desist after already being caught and warned, you deserve your ass Nailed to the Cross. You will see the rest of the league educate themselves real quick as to what the rules are and are not.
From a tender age do football coaches teach "Go out and Kill someone"! Do they mean it, in fact?
.....No

YES, Gregg Williams went over the line in trying to inspire his troops, waaaay over the line. Pay $ for taking out opposing players should never ever be tolerated. Trying to intentionally take out another player with an illegal dirty play is already not allowed. Fine him and suspend Williams and send a strong message going forward to everyone this will be dealt with severely. Done.
However now we have these articles with Dungy and others floating theories on why Manning, Farve and other star players got hurt. We can not start investigations going back years 3, 5, 10 years.
Let's nip this in the bud and move forward. Lay off the sensationalistic stories and quotes of possible disgruntled players or coaches running their mouth.
Everyone has learned the lesson. Move on. A 8 to 16 game suspension and a big is fine.
Let's not go over board with this, Williams was not the only person to ever do this. Let's not demonize him.
Well said. I'm in agreement.

True, I think the investigation into the Redskins and other teams is more of a dog and pony show than anything else. The hammer will fall heavily on the Saints and Williams. Imagine though if Goodell suspends Sean Peyton for a year? Who takes over the Saints?

I kinda expected an investigation to happen with the Redskins and any other team where Williams coached. It is a bit silly to think that the Redskins or the Bills would be held accountable for anything, unless there is some smoking gun that the ownership/FO knew about what was going on. Even still, as you said, the Saints and Williams will bear the brunt of any punishment.

It will hurt no question, but the Saints are a veteran team and they will survive a short suspension. A long suspension of Sean Peyton will kill their season.

The Saint players can put a bounty on Goodell when he is on the sideline.
I wonder if Sean Peyton's knee injury on the sidelines last year was a bounty? Doh! Payback is a bitch.

Greg Blache disliked and discontinued Gregg Williams’ bounty program | ProFootballTalk

It looks as if, and this is coming from Blache, Gibbs as well as a few ex players in Washington at the time, Williams was definitely the one spearheading the bounties, and that noone in this organization knowingly approved the acts. This has to be a good thing for the current organization if we are to get investigated, I doubt any serious penalties would be levied against us.

The link I read quoted ONE guy who took out James Stewart on a LEGAL it. What's the big deal there? Stewart got hurt on a legal hit!!!! It happens every week in the NFL. It sucks that he got hurt but Wire did nothing wrong.

Let me ask you this. What in the world do you think Sean Taylor was trying to do on all those "kill" shots that he delivered in his career??? He wasn't just trying to bring the guy down. He's trying to hurt the opponent. Not hurt him where is career is in jepordy. But hurt him where he's trying to intimidate and inflict pain. That's football!!!!!!!! What GW did was wrong. I just don't have a problem with it, nor do a lot of the players that I've heard comment on it.

I am sure that there are some players out there that have the "intimidation" mentality. However, these bounties pretty much give incentives to players to hurt them to the point where it may jeopardize their career period.

Analysis: "Pay for pain" scandal could end up in courts - Yahoo! News

Good story on some things that could end up happening. With the NFL trying to keep players healthy, and trying to reduce catastrophic injuries, look for them to take a very firm stance on this one guys. This one could very well end up in courts.

In Short - Gregg Williams is toast.

So do you think when Sean Taylor laid the wood on people was he trying to "jeopardize" a career? He was obviously part of this bounty program. You can go on You Tube now and look at all the hits Taylor laid out. What's your opinion on his hitting style?
