Re: Should Mike Shanahan be fired?

Can we stop with the guessing and get back on topic? Thanks.

I nailed it anyway. It is definitely Darrion Scott. Just waiting for SS to confirm.

The one thing about Gibbs is that he would have young QBs sit while a veteran started the whole season. He did it with Mark Rypien, Stan Humpries, Jay Schroeder, and with Jason Campbell. I'm not even sure if Gibbs would have drafted RG3 as he's never taken a QB higher than 25th overall in a NFL draft.

But since today's NFL is different than the one during his first tenure perhaps Gibbs would have drafted RG3 and started him right away.

Not to mention that those other qb's didnt exactly show that they were ready to play as soon as RG-3. I mean we did not have Joe Montana starting already but they werent Steve Young either.

Joe Gibbs started Campbell in 2006 essentially because the season was over, and to give in to a fan base that wanted to believe Mark Brunell was the problem even though he really wasn't.

Consider that at the times Gibbs resigned in 2008, he did make mention that he would have held a QB compeition between Todd Collins and JC had he stayed as coach. I believe Gibbs knew that Campbell was not the answer deep down. Joe preferred veteran QB's because throughout his tenure as head coach it was always the veterans who performed well, played smart, and didn't make mistakes that cost the team...

Also when you have hall of famers all over the field and several pro bowl players on top of that you can get away with "plugging in" qb's. This team now is a far cry from that collection of talent. God - Bethard and Gibbs were just a lethal combination of know how.

Edit: I miss lethal combinations of know how.

Yes I agree completley. But Gibbs just always found a way to make those "old" veteran QB's work.

Looking at Joe Gibbs II, it was just magical how he got his old QB's to play so well:

Mark Brunell 2005 season: at 35 years old, had his best season as a pro. 23 TD's, 10 INT's, 3,050 yards. Brunell was very resurgant and was very dangerous once again up until he hurt his legs in December of 2005.

Todd Collins: 36 years old in 2007, he had a great season even though it was for 4 games and about 1000 yards, but he did throw 5 TD's and 0 INTs, makes you wonder what he could have done if he had the whole 2007 season and beyond.

Man i miss the good old days!

I wonder how Gibbs 2 would have turned out had he went after Kurt Warner back in 04 instead of Brunell. I thought he would go in that direction because of the Coryell connection with Mike Mike Martz.

Re: Should Mike Shanahan be fired?

Warner had a hurt hand while he was in NY. Look at how his career finished up. He went out one of the all-time greats. No doubt we would have been as good or maybe better with Warner than we were with Brunell.

So as one of the 'Fire Shanahan' proponents, what is your (or anyone else who wants to fire Shanny) SPECIFIC plan to get this team back on the right path?

Who would you have picking personnel?
Who would you hire as head coach?
What offensive system would you want in place and who (OC) will run it?
What defensive system would you want in place and who (DC) will run it?
Who are your building block players for the systems you recommend?
This is the only reason I'm not for firing Shanahan. Who is going to replace him? What is the FO structure going to be like?

People say Sean Payton but he is not coming here, vacancy or not. Even if he did its no guarantee that he will turn the Skins into a success story. Why would he or any up and coming candidate come here? Without first round draft picks and a reduced salary cap starting a team and getting him what he'll need will be difficult, at best. And with it being his first year any forward progress won't be seen for a couple of years.

For better or worse we're stuck with MS. I don't see things getting but stranger things have happen.
