On The Knee - Shanny made a gut call and all but admitted he was wrong. In doing so, he seems to have considered the right factors (how is he playing, what's the med. staff saying, what's the athlete saying). The man has more experience with injured players than anyone on this board - I think he has earned the right to go with his gut.

As to the season - Wow. These last 8 weeks have been a great, great ride. We won the division, swept Dallas, made Tony Romo cry ... Thank you Skins! As someone else said, this crazy train is just starting to roll. Climb on board and enjoy the ride.

We're getting off easy if that's all it is. Hope the ACL isn't involved too.

If so, while not good, a torn MCL is not nearly as damaging as a torn ACL. Depending on the severity, surgery on a torn MCL may not even be necessary.

Quote:
On average, it takes six weeks for a MCL injury to heal. The initial treatment for most grade 1, 2 or 3 MCL tears focuses on reducing the pain and inflammation in the knee while immobilizing the knee to keep it stabilized. ...

If the torn ligament does not heal sufficiently, you may experience instability in the joint, and you will be more susceptible to re-injury. The MCL usually responds very well to non-surgical treatment, although surgery may be required in rare cases. Depending on the severity of the injury, a period of rest, bracing and physical therapy usually is sufficient to heal the tear.

Once the MCL has healed fully, you should have a minimum of long-term effects, providing there was no other damage to the knee.

Recovery times differ depending on the severity of the injury:

•A minor, or grade 1, MCL tear can take from a few days to a week and a half to heal sufficiently for you to return to normal activities, including sports.
•A grade 2 tear can take from two to four weeks to heal.
•A grade 3 tear usually takes from four to eight weeks to heal, unless it is associated with damage to the ACL, in which case the recovery time may be longer.

As long as the ACL is not injured, I think all will be fine.

Dan Graziano does some good work for ESPN, and he hit another home run with this blog.
You know what? 6 in one hand a half dozen in the other. If RG3 finished the game with the injury and had won, then Shanahan would be applauded this morning for making such a gutsy call.

If the doctors said that he was physically unable to play, I find it very very unlikely that Shanahan would have ignored that.

Griffin knows how to rehab(done it once before), he was clearly trying to push through it. The biggest question will be how much he has learned about protecting himself, and only next season will let us know.

Just like Mike Vick, I think it's in his DNA to play the way he does.

Re: Seahawks 24 Skins 14 post game thread

Ya know, I was bitterly disappointed yesterday, because I expected the Redskins to win, no matter what. My wife saw how distraught I was after the game, and gave me my birthday present two months early: a Robert Griffin III jersey! I nearly wept like a baby! I really felt bad for this team, because the mentality was to go out there and beat Seattle, skill on skill. I have no doubt that if it was left up to that, a healthy RGIII would have beat the Seahawks soundly.

BUT, as we saw, RGIII wasn't healthy, the Seahawks smelled blood, and their game plan was knock Griffin out of the game, rough up Garcon, play mind games with the 'skins players to knock them off their concentration, and it worked. You can thank the refs for calling such a loose game that it worked in Seattle's favor. But, that style of playing only gets you so far.

A healthy Griffin next year, a healthy Orakpo, a healthy Fred Davis, a healthy Garcon, some upgrades in the secondary....this team is going to be deadly for years to come.

Kory said he regrets trying to play yesterday. I don't think anything's been confirmed on Robert's knee.

Re: Seahawks 24 Skins 14 post game thread

If I'm Snyder, I have Mike Shanahan and Dr. Andrews in my office first thing this morning. I then remove all "health related" playing decisions away from Shanahan and put the onus on my team doctor. Dr. Andrews is being paid by the team to do a job, and it appears to me either he's not doing his job, or Shanahan is overriding it.

To clear this up, and to protect the franchise's most valuable asset, you remove that decision from Mike. This isn't overreacting. I thought about this last night, and wanted to sleep on it before saying this. I woke up feeling the same today as I did last night. Did they not look at RGIII after that roll-out when he hurt himself again? Is our medical team that incompetent or is our coach that stubborn?

Mike appears not competent enough to judge when to pull a player due to health issues, so simply take that away from him and leave the X's and O's.

It's either one of two things. Bad coaching decision or bad medical staff. The only way you find out is remove the choice from the coach and it continues, you know to replace your medical staff.
