Character!!!

reading the redskins.com article leaves me with the impression that a lot of consideration was given to character in making these picks. With our players from "the U" deciding not to be a part of the team and Lavar griping every week, maybe Joe is trying to send a message here. thoughts?

Re: Character!!!

Gibbs has stressed character since he got here. The draft results aren't exactly surprising in that respect.

Re: Character!!!

I agree. I think that we went out of our ways to fill some areas that weren't considered top priorites, but to gather some depth/special teams players that are very well grounded individuals.

I think Joe isn't necisarrily sending out a message to the rest of the team, but continuing to build a "Core group" of "Redskins."

And I'm all for it.

Re: Character!!!

Yep, I gotta love the types of guys we got here, even if I've never heard of several of them. One served in Kuwait and South Korea, another graduated from The Citadel. Nobody has a bigger work ethic and respect for authority than the military. Not to mention tough.

We've got a potential Antonio Pierce Jr. in Newberry, who was a national merit scholar. We need a field general at LB, and this guy might be it someday.

We shouldn't expect our squad to get turned around overnight. Right now we're bringing in hard-working, humble players. We can build upon that and pretty soon we'll have a very strong team concept in place.

This is the same approach that New England is using as well. Obviously it has worked for them.

Re: Character!!!

Two comments here:

1. As long as Joe Gibbs is even a part of the personnel selection/retantion processes here, character will be an important part of the equation. You can agree or disagree with the level of importance that is given to "character" but that's the way it is and is gonna be.

2. Do NOT take any item published/reported on redskins.com as anything more than "propaganda". If it has a "message" in it for the guys not participating in the off-season program, you can be sure that it is a "message" generated and prepared by the Skins' FO and no one else. Don't rely on anything there as being authoratative or even "truthful" any more than you would rely on something offered up by the folks who administer the Redskins' cheerleaders.

Re: Character!!!

Of course. of course but what I thought was interesting was that they said so and so was on his way to church and another guy is smarter than the coaches, absolutely nothing about yards per carry or sacks.

redwagonskins:

For some reason - and since I don't read minds I don't know what that reason is - the Skins' FO wants the message out that they took guys with "character". And once that decision has been made, the "poets" in the PR shop get busy putting that mesage out - - and redskins.com is one of the primary conduits for that message.

You are parsing the sentences there looking for something that is missing - - because they never tried to include it in the message. You want to know about on-field performance and right now they are talking about "character". Don't confuse the messages.

When they want to stress performance and football ability, redskins.com will tell you how Joe Flabeetz averaged 7.2 yards per carry and 11 yards per reception during his career at North East Southewest State A&M - - but they will ignore the fact that he axe murdered his entire family and has been convicted of molesting barnyard animals on three previous ocasions...

Consider the source.

Re: Character!!!

I like the words Coach Gibbs Chose... "character" That is a direct knock on Taylor & players that are going to put themselves ahead of the teams best interest.

I heard the FO was totally impressed with Campbell and his ability to throw the fade w/o stepping forward, appearantly that is not easy to do w/o possessing a very strong arm, ala John Elway or Brett Farve.

Whether you all want to support the FO & their draft choices is your businees, but when Ramsey was stinking it up a few years ago everybody was demanding the FO do something & fast. I'm not a huge Ramsey fan as I have watched him long enough to know that he has ability, but is no better then a #2 QB in the NFL. Hell, the Skins could have drafted Dan Orlovsky from UCONN & got a better mobile QB then Ramsey.

I'm not trying to knock Ramsey, I'm just stating my opinion & I was pleased that they took Campbell, would I have preferred Spears, James, or Ware, probably, but they were taken & the Cowboys did so just to steal these plays from having to face one in the season, gotta love Parcells for that.
