Dumbest rule in football.

While enjoying dallas losing (hope it lasts) drew bledsoe passed joe montana in yards passed. 40 thousand something. Thats such a pantload. Its not fair that a QB can throw a 1 yard screen, the receiver runs 99 yards and the stats say the QB threw for 100 yards. Give the receiver 99 and the QB 1.

The receiver gets it too. Also, there is usually a YAC category these days too.

Re: Dumbest rule in football.

i disagree, for example brunell on his second pass of the last game owned and threw a perfect pass, he deserved the full 70 yards for recognizing that moss had the biggest potential of going to the house. It is just that QBs have options and by throwing a 1 yarder they make a decision and if it is a good one then the receiver probally will go for many yards therefore they deserve the yards in my opinion

Re: Dumbest rule in football.

there are definetly a lot more rules dumber then this one. this one isn't even dumb. how can you dis-cred a qb yards just because he throws to a spot and the reciever puts on extra yeards.

Re: Dumbest rule in football.

How about if you intercept a pass on a 2 point conversion, run it back 100 yards, you don't get 6 points???

How come Punts are measured from the line of scrimmage and Field goals from the spot of the kick?

How come Oliver Stone is still allowed to make movies?

These are the things I can't understand.

While I hate a tie (like kissing your sister. Believe me, it's over rated), I HATE the NFL version, which basically means the game often is determined by a coin toss.

Why not some version of the college system where both teams get a chance.

If you score, and I don't I lose.

But if you score and I don't get a chance, how fair is that?

IMHO

yeah that is what i meant the nfl version. I like two ideas, first to 5(which i think is the same thing as first to 4) points or the college rules. College rules are very nice and defenses have to put up a stop while the first to 5 rule forces it to be either a TD or two field goals, also a safty and field goal would be a win.

Re: Dumbest rule in football.

If the NFL can finally adopt the 2-pt conversion, why not the OT?

Re: Dumbest rule in football.

if we take the NCAA OT system, do we have to take the BCS too?

Re: Dumbest rule in football.

OK, here's another rule I don't understand:

Can someone tell me what the difference is between pass interference and illegal contact (when the defender touches the receiver beyond five yards) ?

One is penalized only five yards, while the other gets the ball placed where the infraction happened. And I know it's not dependent on who the intended receiver is -- I originally thought the pass interference was called only on the intended receiver, while illegal contact was called on any receiver. But watching the Atlanta-Buffalo game, the ball was thrown at a Buffalo wideout, who was touched well after 5 yards, and it was an illegal contact penalty. But why wasn't it pass interference?

Is it simply a judgement call? Or am I missing something?

Re: Dumbest rule in football.

i rather the NBA OT rules... add 15minutes, if the score is still tied, add 15 more... still tied? 15more, etc.

fatigue + injuries make it unlikely to ever be used, but it'd be my choice. I don't like the NCAA OT rules... its geared towards offensive teams and forced turnovers for the defenses, so there's still some of the luck over skill the current OT system suffers from.

That makes sense, but yesterday during the Falcons-Bills game, the ball was in the air, and they called illegal contact. Now, I should mention it was one of those very late flags, the kind that the official throws well after the play, when the receiver protested heavily.

It seems that pass interference is called when the receiver is absolutely mauled by a defensive back right before the ball arrives, while illegal contact is just that -- very minimal contact. To me, it looks like nothing but a judgement call, dependent on the mood of the official at the time.
