Excellent Pre-game Scouting Report! Part II!
In each game there are several crucial individual battles, and this will be no different. Here are my top 3 matchups to look out for.
1. Jon Jansen versus Adewely Ogunleye.. Jansen will be playing with a cast, which may hamper him slightly. Ogunleye has speed and power coming off the end, and this will be Jansen’s first official game coming off his season ending injury last year. If Jansen struggles to keep one of the premier defensive ends in the league out of the backfield, then Ramsey will have a difficult time surveying the defense and finding the open spots.
2. Shawn Springs versus Mushin Muhammed. Muhammed is a veteran receiver, and has had some of his better games versus the Skins in years past. Springs is out to prove his play last year was no fluke and that he deserved a Pro Bowl selection. While Muhammed is at a bit of a disadvantage due to the Bears starting a rookie quarterback, this battle will go along way toward determining the winner in this one. Springs likes to play physically, but if he gets too close Muhammed can get around him and shield him with his body. With the Skins ability to shut down just about any running game, the Bears offense may have to come from here.
3. Kyle Orton versus Gregg Williams. This may well be the most important of all the matchups. Williams is known for his blitz packages and wide variety of formations. He indicated earlier this preseason that e had 19 different formations to choose from, and Orton may well see each and every one of them. Orton will not no where the blitz is coming from on any given play, but he can bank on it coming from someone. And if he doesn’t locate Sean Taylor when facing those blitzes, he could easily have a couple of interceptions in this one.
As I see it, this game will be won in the trenches. Whichever team is able to control the line of scrimmage and establish a running game will come away with the win. Make no mistake; these are two talented defenses and points will be at a premium. Both quarterbacks will likely turn the ball over, so it will be up to the running game and special teams to set the table. The Redskins have the edge in both areas, as well as coaching. Thus I am predicting a 16-10 win for the Redskins, in the same fashion of the season opener last year against Tampa Bay. Regardless of the score, this game will not be as easy as some folks think.
