In my own experience on hiring committees, all of the finalists for a job are qualified. The question then becomes more about "can we get along?" and less about other factors.

Please don't misconstrue my statement, nothing about your comment was remotely controversial. In fact, 9/10 times you are absolutely right. But every now and again, that douchey 10 percent eeks their way to the top somehow lol.
