I'm a grumpy old man (66) who has long thought the extra point to be useless.
I've disliked the idea of games being decided by kicks for a long time. I wouldn't mind if the field goal was eliminated, as well. If field goals were eliminated, we'd find out which team is truly the better team. Then, if teams want to win, they'd better be able to stick the ball in the end zone. If there are more ties, I'm OK with that. The better teams will still emerge over the course of a full season.
The new kickoff rule has
already virtually eliminated kickoff returns. Honestly, I liked it the way it used to be because I find kickoff and punt returns to be an exciting part of the game. Yet, it's time for us to realize and accept that the NFL kicking game is on a slippery slope. If the lawyers who run the NFL office are going to eventually eliminate the kicking game in its entirety they might as well do it now.
The game can start with one team having the ball on it's own 20 yard line. Punts, perhaps renamed "Give Ups", would simply involve a HC waving a white flag and the officials would move the ball 40 yards downfield where the other team's offense would start.
