Re: Free Agency Begins in a Week, Whats the Plan?
Something has to be done about right tackle: now version 6.0.
I prefer the idea of addressing the line in the draft, although I would wait about three weeks and then sign some offensive lineman who can help. The presence of guys like Tom Compton and Josh LeRibeus should mean that the Redskins can avoid spending real money at the position.
If Anthony Collins is going to sign in the first few days of free agency, I'll bend the rules a bit for him. He's a good player, although a bit of a slow developer.
I would expect to get multiple lineman and receivers in the draft, which means my free agency focal point is defense. Orakpo, Hall, and Baker coming back takes a nice chunk of the work out of the free agent shopping.
My main target is Brandon Spikes. I think safety is a bigger need, but Spikes is a better player than any of the available safeties. I also think he's somewhat undervalued as a player. He hasn't been a factor in coverage, but he also hasn't reached the age where linebackers typically become good coverage players.
I really wouldn't be shocked to see Josh Wilson back on a one year deal in the $1.5 million range. The Redskins need a nickel corner, and limiting Wilson's snaps could help with the injury issues he's had the last few years. He's okay out of the slot. Tackles well. I think he's better than he's given credit for, but he got targeted a lot down the stretch and offenses had a ton of success throwing at him. Wilson is actually a great fit for the defense, but the key is that the Redskins can develop Richard Crawford or Chase Minnifield enough to be serious consideration to play if Amerson or Hall misses time.
I like targeting Chris Clemons (Miami safety) to fill the free safety need on a 5 year deal. They really need two safeties, but I'm okay with getting one this year, adding one later in the draft to pair with Thomas and Rambo, and then waiting for the season to see if someone on the roster can handle the second safety. If Jose Gumbs is getting starts with Clemons, then you know you need to sign another guy in 2015.
Then I think they have to go above and beyond just filling holes, and get a good player on the defensive line that takes Bowen's roster spot. They have to get more production out of that position, and even though a salary structure where you are paying Bowen deadcap and another player to actually perform in that spot.
Luckily, the FA class is deep in just two spots: corner and defensive line. Lamarr Houston, Arthur Jones, Vance Walker, Randy Starks, Linval Joseph, Red Bryant, Tony McDaniel, Jason Hatcher can all help. I'd kick the tires on B.J. Raji or Cam Thomas if the price was right.
I'd try to get Sidney Rice coming off ACL reconstruction as the cherry on top of the offseason if the price is right. He's the best receiver on the market by a large margin, and his price will be discounted for his injury history.
