This year we seem to be taking that approach and people are up in arms. There is still talent left out there in Free Agency, and we just spent 2 draft picks on safeties a year ago and I dont think bailing on them just yet is the plan. One in which (Thomas) we havent even see play.
There are options to be had at a much more reasonable price than the ridiculous contracts these first batch of FAs received (Outside of MItchell who I believe was reasonable deal at $5M per but questions concerning him benefiting for such a good front.)
At CB -
Rodgers-Cromartie - If his heart is in it he can be a borderline elite man cov CB.
Carlos Rodgers - He would be a great vet presence who could help at nickel or #2 or S possibly.
Antonio Cromartie - He can still play and would be cheap and is man 2 man.
Tracey Porter- Character issues, but excellent man to man cover guy.
Brandon Browner - Character Issues and suspensed 4 games. But at one point was considered the most physical CB in the league at 6'4 200+ lbs. Could be cheap.
Also Brown and Munnerlyn. Captain Munnerlyn I view as solely a Nickel he is another Josh Wilson but i dont view him as quite as tough of a 5'8 CB as Wilson was.
Plus we are attached to Corey Graham who had a great season last year and has the size we have been lacking at 6'+. Although I dont put too much stock in him yet.
At Safety there are also still options.
Personally Merriweather if he got he crap together I believe could still be a contributor, the guy isnt 27 yet and people forget he is a 2x probowl player. Just needs a readjustment.
Chris Clemons - Not worth breaking the bank over but has range and speed.
Thomas Decoud - Not the best cover guy but is a ball hawk when its in the air and can play in the box.
Champ Bailey/ Charles Tillman - Both have been mentioned to being open to position switches to prolong careers and would add a leadership voice to a defense that currently has none. We Miss you London.
But Mainly I like the approach of looking at Antonio Smith, and maybe another big body rotation guy like Terrence Cody who aren't elite pass rushers from DL spots by any means but we enough push due to strength to warrant double teams and collapse the pocket vastly helping the secondary. A weak pass rush can make any secondary look terrible.
There is still options out there for ILB as well which can help us.
My favorite being Spikes, just because of his tough nose run stopping ability. He brings a toughness I believe the Redskins could use.
Bottom line - Its early, stop complaining yet. The draft is loaded with CBs. We still have options and I think bailing on our recent draft picks so early is what always get the redskins in trouble. Think about Seattle, when in Nickel Packages they have 10 of 11 starters all drafted by Seattle, they just gave them time to develop and opportunities to improve.
I think for once, we may be making the smart moves instead of the splash moves and in the end I believe it will pay dividends

Rodgers-Cromartie - now there's a name I haven't heard much of in the early goings of free agency. I wonder if Denver can afford him now that they signed Ward, Talib and are pursuing Ware...
He would definitely be worth a look in my opinion if Denver doesn't re-sign him.
