They are going to have to exercise his option for 2016 - 18 mill - before the 2015 season begins. So if he is starting opening day next year he will be starting opening day 2016 or we will have the richest back up qb in the history of the game. Im not so sure they extend him at this point, and if they dont there might be some hurt feelings resulting in someone else playing qb next year.

If a team does extend a player, the contract does not become guaranteed until the start of that NFL year (which is in march). We can do the 5th year option and still cut him before march 2016 and pay nothing for year 5. The exception being if he suffers a long term injury that would have him out in 2016 then he will get an injury guarantee and that 5th year will be paid.
