If you can believe what Mike Shanahan had to say regarding the trade, and not write him off as a bitter ex-employee, then it seems that Snyder wanted to make the trade, wanted Bruce Allen to figure it out logistically, and then entrusted Mike Shanahan to make it all work. It cannot be over-looked that Shanahan also drafted Cousins, perhaps even back then as a contingency plan.
Rumor mills say that as early as 2014, Shanahan saw that RG3 was physically a shell of his former self, and internally pushed for Kirk Cousins to be the starter, but he was rebuffed and it took a legit injury to RG3 for Shanahan to attempt to make his move. Unfortunately the team was in disarray and Cousins could not make the most of the opportunity. I am told that it is true indeed that Shanahan considered resigning at the end of the season due in part to the treatment of RG3 by ownership and what MS perceived as "coddling" towards RG3.
Its obvious that Shanahan was right in hindsight, which is partially why there is now interest in him once again as an NFL Head Coach. The biggest question on my mind is how Dan Snyder feels about Kirk Cousins. We know Scott Mc is a big cousins fan, as is the coaches and the players. If Cousins can truly get embraced by Snyder, then i think Cousins fans have nothing to worry about.
