He's still young (will be 24) and at 6'6", 280 he ran a 4.7 sec 40. He got some playing time last year, before going on IR, so I'm sure he's been able to slow things down in his mind now and will be even better next year.
Maybe not a starter, but definitely should help as much or more as any 8-10 yr old re-tread. I'd also put him ahead of most rookie DE's, so I wouldn't waste #17 on a highly rated DE, especially if they're light in the ass (under 260 lbs).
I really don't think we'll be that bad at DE as others do. It isn't all about sacks. Our D-line first and foremost needs to Stop the Run.
Our OLB's are good, especially if we get Gallete back and/or Preston steps up, along with Kerrigan, we should generate enough pass rush to contend.

i've heard Lanier is up to 290 now and all is moving very well . . . i thin he could not only become a starter, but a stud at DE . . . though i think it will take a couple of years for him to get to that status
