Re: Is Carlos Rogers overrated?
Way too early to tell with Rogers.
But I thought (and this is surely stating the obvious) that the pass D was very badly exposed yesterday, top to bottom. Lack of a consistent pass rush from your down four leads to a need to blitz, which leaves you in single coverage. And most NFL recievers are going to beat man-to-man a fairly high percentage of the time. The injury to Taylor was a big blow in that department as well. I'm all for aggressive D, but leaving your corners out on an island late is sometimes a recipe for disaster. But that's the sort of D we have right now.
But it wasn't a particularly bad strategy--Simms had thrown picks when pressured, so applying pressure was a smart call. The bucs didn't blitz much and we killed them with the run and the short/intermediate pass. So, as Gibbs said last week, it's a chess match. And then it's about execution--our DBs and blitz didn't get it done, Simms and co did.
