A straight fly route against a player faster or just as fast is awfully tough to get open, you really can't pick up on that stuff on TV, but if that's the case perhaps Gibbs should add a little spice to the patterns as you said with slants, and come back routes, forcing the DB to stay close to the reciever, which would then give Jacobs a better chance of beating a DB deep.
To many players last season from opposing defenses where saying how simple it was to figure out our passing game, it sounds a little like what Jacobs is getting at here.
