Here's the past 9 drafts, players that are still in the league, making an impact - mostly starters, but some are now backups. They are still contributing as compared to other draft picks who are either not in the league or have disappeared on the benches somewhere.
- RGIII, Kirk Cousins, Alfred Morris, Tom Compton
- (no 1st Rd pick) Jordan Reed, Chris Thompson,
- (no 1st Rd pick) Trent Murphy, Morgan Moses, Bashaud Breeland
- Brandon Scherff, Preston Smith, Jamison Crowder, Austin Reiter
- Kendall Fuller, Matt Ioannidis, Nate Sudfeld
- Jonathan Allen, Ryan Anderson, Fabian Moreau, Chase Rouillier
- Daron Payne, Tim Settle
- Montez Sweat, Terry McLaurin, Cole Holcomb, Jimmy Moreland
- Chase Young, Antonio Gibson, Kamren Curl
As you can see there were some pretty good picks prior to Kyle Smith and all his glory. There were also some pretty bad picks (not listed) before Kyle and with Kyle. The notion that things are markedly better because of his presence is simply false. You really really like him though, and that's ok. I just don't think he's as much of a difference maker as you would like to believe.
