And he is married and the passenger wasn't his wife? Maybe he was just helping her out. So still lots to wait to hear about. But looks like it's heading towards multiple bad decisions that led to this.

Regardless of whatever it is, it's still a shitty end to a young man's life. Also, based on what we know so far, the driver that hit him needs some sympathy. I couldn't imagine hitting and killing someone (if it was sheer wrong place/wrong time).
