I don't understand why some mediocre team gets added to the playoffs because 2 legitimate playoff teams didn't get to finish their game due to a 1 in a million chance outside of everyone's control.

Good point, the tie option also makes a lot of sense, especially with both teams' players and coaches apparently not wanting this game to be played.
