I can understand the sentimental thing too, but I also agree that the number stays with the veteran unless he decides to give it up, regardless of if he is a star or a back-up. Perhaps someone like SkinsnCanes can confirm this, but didn't Portis wear #28 at Miami? That means he only had #26 for 2 years, which IMO isn't long enough to be sentimental, and obviously #28 for the Skins is off limits....so just pick a new number, dammit!
