there is a voting system called AAD voting. It stands for Approve Approve Disapprove. In this system you vote for your first and second approve choice and one disapprove choice. both approves are worth +1, a disapprove is -1. The secret sauce in this system is that ANY candidate that gets 50%+1 disapproves is automatically disqualified. Thus by definition the candidate would start with a positive approval rating and if used in primaries we would be looking at far more consensus candidates and fewer polarizing figures.
I am sure it's not perfect, and I imagine current polarizing figures would challenge its constitutionality. but it does address the biggest single issue with our current system - that candidates are disapproved by the majority of Americans.
