Alex smith was, imo, a great signing. the knee thing kind of wrecked it all, but that was such a high value/low cost pick up at the time. Shawn springs played way above cost until he couldn't stay on the field, but the first 2-3 years, he was aces.

I believe this happened during Gibbs 2.0 and we ended up with Mark Brunell.
The funny thing is that that the Dolphins almost got Brees as well, but opted for Daunte Culpepper. Brees was coming off a bad shoulder injury and the only team that took a chance on him was New Orleans, and the rest was history.
