I like the move by the Panthers.
Is $38 million for 6 years a ton of cash? Yes.
Is Delhomme as accurate as Pennington or as strong-armed as Favre? No.
But, the deal is not as crazy as it sounds. For one, the contract is VERY backloaded. Second, the signing bonus (the most important part of any deal) is a mere $6 million. Third, Delhomme is a very mature and poised individual. Fourth, he gets the job done when it counts most.
So lets say that Jake is just a decent QB, but not worth a $7 million salary by year four of the deal? The Panthers can cut him and be out less than $3 million in dead money the next season. But I think he is better than just an average QB; not a Pro-Bowler, but certainly better than a lot of starting QBs out there.
Oh, by the way, the 'Skins almost got Jake last offseason, but opted for Rob Johnson.
