I've had several surgeries involving a lot of screws, plates and pins (4 surgeries). You have to take it slow and even when the bone is fully healed and grown around the metal, you'll need a few months to start weight-bearing activities and work your way up to your previous abilities little-by-little. After the required months of doing nothing with the affected body part, your muscle will be down to nothing and besides being careful not to break the bone from stress, you'll need some time to build your strength back up.

He won't be ready for the preseason or first half of the season unless he does out there with one weaker leg and a chance to re-injure it.

A year sounds fair, expect him back in the second half if not closer to playoff time.
