I don't see any correlation between 2000 and now.
Back then we overspent on over the hill, big name players, some of whom didn't really fill a need (Jeff George) other than to fill out the roster like a fantasy team.
The past 3 years we've carefully selected players that are young and on the rise, and fill need positions. We also now look for other critical characteristics such as character and work ethic.
