I do find Cook to be very funny, but I agree that he is overrated. You don't really have to think about his comedy too much and I think that's why it's so popular among people my age. Plus, it's easy to imitate and quote at parties (or on this site as I was doing before) so it can make you seem funnier.
Personally, Greg Geraldo and Lewis Black are two of my favorite comics right now.
