If Rivers does not have a contract within a year, the Chargers' rights to him expire and he becomes eligible for the draft again next year. If you recall, the Texans drafted Drew Henson (even though he said he didn't want to play football) with a later round pick in the 2003 draft. During the offseason, the Texans turned Henson into a 2nd (I think) round pick by trading him to Dallas, where he eventually signed a contract after deciding making $3million a year in the Yankees farm system wasn't something he wanted to do.
