I have heard that if/when the ice caps melt, the Hudson river in NY will freeze over every year. Doesn't make much sense, if the globe is warming. However, the explanation is that the cold arctic waters are a major contributor to the gulf stream (the warm water stream which traverses the globe). If the ice caps melt, the gulf stream will cease and many places which rely on the gulf stream for warm weather will actually get (much) colder.

Somebody please correct me, if I am wrong.
