Anyone claiming a few years of bad hurricanes, or warm spells has to do with global warming is way off. The year to year natural fluctuations that occur in no way can predict any kind of trend we may be having. Global warming can be analyzed as something that happends over the hundreds of years, not year to year.

I always laugh when people (esp. politicians) bring up Katrina as a poss. link to global warming. Anyone that knows anything about weather knows that that isn't the case. It's a perfect example to how a politician works in our system. Trying to find any possible way to back up there agenda, to get something for their constintuents, so that they get re-elected.

The worst hurricanes happened in the 1900's...cat 4 and 5 storms battered the coast on a regular basis.

Katrina was statistically supposed to happen. There is a chance every year that a Cat. 5 hurricane was going to hit the gulf coast, and they were due for one.

Hurricane History
Katrina had actually weakened a lot by the time it hit the coast. It didn't even hit New Orleans directly either. The flooding was not from the storm, it was because they built the city BELOW sea level and the levies were built to only sustain a Cat 3 storm IF in good condition. These levies were in need of repair for about 25-30 years but were ignored. The federal $ that the state and local governments of LA and NO were used on projects like casinos and other buildings instead of being spent on what they requested the money for. It was corrupt government officials down there that caused the death and destruction...with a little credit towards the first contractors that decided to make a city shaped like a toilet bowl. It finally flushed on them. Ok...blame gravity if you don't want to blame Mayor Nagin and Governor Landreau.

So what did we do? Give them MORE money that is still being mis-spent. Nagin couldn't use buses to get people OUT of the storm, but he found the keys and bus drivers to bring people back to vote for him. How he got re-elected is beyond me...and it really makes me want to throw all sympathy for the residents out of the window.
