If Portis is healthy - and there's no reason to assume he will not be - Betts is the "back-up". That's the reality whether or not you want to believe it's "the right thing" in the grand scheme of the universe.
Vilma would be the starting MLB on this team even with a broken arm; that's how much better he is at MLB (in a 4-3) or at ILB (in a 3-4) than anyone else on the roster. Yes, I said ANYONE else on the roster.
And so, in order to acquire a lead-pipe cinch starting MLB, if what I had to give up was a back-up RB and a switch of first round picks, you bet I'd take that deal in a NY minute. And that's why I don't think it's gonna happen that way - - unless [hold your breath, folks] the Redskins sweeten the deal...

The problem is losing the #6 pick, hence, losing a potential monster at defensive tackle (assuming they would have picked Alan Branch). Even with Jonathan Vilma, you still need to bolster the middle alongside C. Grifin.
I don't care what linebackers you have. If you're getting manhandled at the line of scrimmage, a superstar LB making the tackle 5 yards later is still a huge problem.
