There's a chance that Portis will be unable to regain his 2005 form due to the amount of carries he got that season. I have to say though, his per play numbers as a less than healthy running back were very promising. It's not unprescidented for a player to get as many carries as Portis got in 2005 to never regain a dominant form, after all, not everybody can be Eric Dickerson or Jerome Bettis.
Having Betts will ensure that if Portis ends up not being as good as he has been that we can switch RBs without having to do something stupid like trading a 3rd round pick for a RB. At the very least, lightening Portis' load will prevent him from having another season where he takes a beating similar to the one he took in 2005, and should prolong his career.
