Someone on hockey board speculated that the Caps are acting like there won't be a 'next season'. They are betting that the NHL will ease the restrictions on who can become a free agent, leading to a record number of free agents leading into the following season. By clearing out enough salary, the Caps will have the cash to sign some veterans and mix them in with the youth.
I'm not sure if that's what the Caps are doing, but in a way it makes sense. I just hope there is a "next season"
