Never had a car GPS but I have had several for the boat. If you pay less than $200 or $300 I would think the unit will be very limited and you will not be very happy with the unit. With boat GPS systems the more you pay the more they will do and the less you will have to do so yes you are paying for the soft wear in the units. The basic unit for a boat starts at $400 plus.
